Unpatriotic if you don't support Bush? This guy doesn't think so...?
"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly as necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

yup, used that quote many a times. But for some reason many people still say "well we should just support him, he's the President".. even though one of the more famous past Presidents, as you so eloquently quoted, would have argued otherwise.
Might I add that Teddy Roosevelt was the original Conservationist. Why much of the party has drifted away from those moderate environmentalist views is beyond me.

You are IGNORING the part that says:
"... it is absolutely NECESSARY... to tell the TRUTH about his acts, and this means that it is EXACTLY as necessary... to PRAISE him when he does RIGHT."
That's the crappy, unpatriotic thing.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
George W. Bush has been right and done well FAR more often than that.
The Administration has had some remarkable successes that the Bush-haters were too busy foaming at the mouth to even notice.
The economy is remarkably strong and they're acting like we're on the brink of disaster. Half of the indicators are at levels that Clinton would have given his eye teeth for.
Our relations with foreign allies are in good shape and the Democrats act like we have to slink around the world ashamed to let people know we're Americans. The Bush Administration has had a string of diplomatic successes that have gone unheralded.
Bush is a smart and nice man with a lovely, classy family. He has been treated like dirt but managed to maintain an astonishing dignity that is the mark of a true gentleman.
He is a finer man and better human being than the lot of his nasty critics. Most of them don't seserve to shine his shoes.
Frankly, Bush could cure cancer tomorrow the Bush-haters would find fault. They'd say that he cured it the wrong way or not soon enough. Rev. Wright would probably accuse him of having found the cure by testing on black people. Some would say the cure was too expensive even if it was free.
If it rained while people were on their way to the hospital to get the cure, the rain would be Bush's fault.
The headline on the New York Times would read: Rain Falls on Cancer Sufferers - Women and Blacks Get Wetter Under Bush Plan
Give credit WHEN credit is due or SHUT UP.

Yeah, nice quote. But what you don't seem to understand is that your opinion is just that and does not constitute 'truth'. Then, too, there's the pesky little fact that a complaint without a better option amounts to little more than whining. You don't like what the president's doing? You object to it? Fine. I can respect that. Suggest a better way. You see anyone can complain. My kids b*tch all the time when I tell them to mow the lawn, but then I remind them that the lawn's not going to mow itself.
Democrats are like this. They don't like what the president does, they b*tch all the time, but they never seem to have a better solution. They seem content to insult and name call, but again, no better alternative. Wonder why that is. Can you tell me why that is?
How should we address the threat of international terrorism. You hold the corner on truth and righteousness. Wanna share? I'll be waiting. Heck, I've been waiting for 7 years. We all have. I can wait a little longer.

WOW.
Not one of my more favorite presidents, but that's a great quote!
Margaret H, we are talking about the presidentof the United States here, not an undisciplined child.
However, there doesn't seem to be much difference between an undisciplined child and the current leader.

I agree as well. But then in Teddy's day people told the truth more than they do today. Today people blame Bush for stupid crap.

there is a difference between opposing a president and outright disrespecting him. It's a very sad state our country is in now, that the President gets treated with such ridiculous disrespect, whether you like him or not.

the true american patriot never voted for bush and recognizes he is the worst president ever.
