I would get the Mazda.
Its going to cost more though and the 2 cars are in different classes so they don't compete. I had great luck with Mazda cars in the past. Not so much with my tC.
I cant believe people get their 16 yr old kids new cars. Everybody here was 16 and knows what kids did to their cars. We either wrecked it or just trashed it. Your mom should split a nice 10 yr old cheap used car with you. Then she wont need to worry about expensive repairs for crash damage and you learn the value of responsibility.

I'm going to agree with most everyone else on here and recommend that you get a used car to start out with, just to make sure that you've got driving down, get through high school with it, and then look to upgrade when you go to college.
As for the cars, my second car was a '96 Mazda Protege. It was a great car and the only trouble I had with it was that the exhaust rusted out about every year (Detroit area roads are over-salted), and I had to install three sunroofs, which were aftermarket. I test drove the Mazda 3 when I was looking for a new car and it was great, if you're looking for a car to compare with the Scion TC (which is what I bought) this will be a tough choice for you, I recommend test driving both before you choose, since the Mazda 6 is a slightly larger version of the 3.
As for transmission, here's why you should get the used car first, if you can't drive a stick shift, learn on the used car to save wear and tear on your new one. Driving with a stick shift is much more rewarding in the long run than with an automatic...if you're not shifting, you're only steering, not driving.
I'll also recommend that you test drive other cars in the classes as well, and see which one you like the best. Before I bought my Scion, I test drove Hyundai's, the Ford Focus, The Chevy Cobalt, Saturn Astra, Honda Civic, and Volkswagen Jetta.
So shop around before you choose, it's decision that you're going to ave to live with for a while and make sure that you make the right one.

Depends on what you are looking for. The Mazda6 is more expensive and is a bigger car than the Scion. The Scion is more of a child's car though. That is what Toyota marketed towards. Although the Mazda6 comes with a base 2.3L I-4 engine, the Scion would get more mpg.
If you know how to drive a 5-speed, get that, they are a lot better to drive with, and faster. But if you are in stop and go traffic a lot, and will burn out your clutch a lot, stick with the auto. They are easier to drive and the whole thing is covered under warranty.

depends, i am in pretty much the same situation as you but know a guy from toyota who could have given me a really god deal on any toyota except scions and i chose the scion couse it is just a great car. manual is more fun and cheaper but if you like auto get that. tc is really safe(just say that and look up scion tc crash on google) it also has alot of standard stuff that the mazda probley wont have at all. 09 is coming out this in a few weeks so weight to see them before deciding if you can.

the mazda 6 is a bigger engine.. V6 and its a 4 door, bigger. which means it's going to me more expensive for gas, get less gas mileage and have higher insurance. the scion is only a 2 door and is more lightweight. they're both pretty good cars but if youre looking for something more reasonable in the price ranging for a 16 year old i'd go with the scion. 5 speed scions are badass by the way. :) Plus they cost less and are quicker

I bought a used 05 Tc and I love it. I compared it with the Mazda 3 which is in the same class. I agree with a lot of people in saying the Mazda is more sedan than coupe. It all depends on what you are looking for.
Gas to me should no be the main factor in selection. Go to Edmund's.com and compare both online and go test drive them both. Read online articles of both cars from Car publications. Get peoples opinions from consumer stand point and a professional stand point.
Look for the negatives and positives in each and compare it to what you are looking for. Research will be your best friend.

Consumer Reports can provide objective scoring on performance, reliability, crash test reports, etc., for both models. Check out their website.
Personally, I prefer the Mazda 6, simply because I would rather have the practicality of a sedan than that of a coupe.

like others said they both are different kind of cars...one is sedan and one is sports coupe.
and depends on wat r u looking at....i liked scion tC for the following reasons:
1) Its made by toyota and same engine as Camry...so that means its reliable car
2) Standard Options....like power sunroof, 6 speaker and 1 sub audio system, ipod connectivity, tire pressure system, fold down seats, projector headlights, auto one touch windows and door lock
3) looks....gr8 headlights, light turn signal, sleek shape (kinda aggressive :) )
4) performance....great pickup, good mpg ( depends how u drive it), customizable
5) safety features, front side, knee, passenger sentor airbags, etc etc..
on the other hand is the mazda 6:
1) reliability is not that good bec. its a ford compaired to toyota
2) looks are ok,,,,but its sedan (depends who u think) , i personly like coupes :)
3) performance ...gr8 if u go with sporty models, MPGs ok too. u can't really customize this car as tC
i would go with tC but on other hand mazda 6 aint that bad...but thier is a price difference...tC is alot cheaper and offer a lot of standard features than a Mazda 6.
i would go for tC.......its a gr8 car!!
i got mine tC last year when i was 16 too...i absolutely love it.
gud luck bro!!

the scion is a poor mans car..the mazda is a real nice car...fast,good mpg... forget the scion...its 4 people who can't afford a toyota

I like the Scion tC a LOT. Anything from toyota is a good deal
