I've published dozens of poems in many different magazine, some print journals, some e-zines. And I've had many more poems rejected. Sometimes a poem will get rejected several times before it finally finds a home. Sometimes I'll submit five or ten poems to a journal and they'll accept just one or two.

You ask what kind of response to expect. Typically, you'll receive a form letter. If they're not accepting any of your work, they'll thank you politely for submitting and maybe invite you to try again with some new poems. If they're accepting some of your poems, they'll tell you which ones, and they may tell you when your work will appear. In the case of print journals, they may also mention how many copies of the magazine you'll receive as a contributor (any other payment is rare).

Some editors will make the response a bit more personal by adding a few words about what they liked or didn't like about the poems you submitted. That's more likely to happen if you're submitting to a magazine with which you already have a relationship -- either they've published you before or they've rejected you but invited you to resubmit.

Haha I actually had a little poem published in the kids section of the newspaper when I was in 6th grade.

    Sacajawea running wild

    Running to catch her people

    Now her breath's run out.

They've taken her away. lol Is that a true poem...Not!!, but it felt good anyway.

I tried to send something to Reader's Digest once but that was kicked back. Digest means it has to be already published somewhere else doesn't it? Mine was an original. Too bad so sad. Mmm

My guess is about 107 people here have been rejected and/or published. I know for a fact that 24 of them have, 27 if you count Scarlet, Pomak and the Major.

I once had the fantasy that my juvenile 17-year old poetry had some value in the literature market. I sent samples to a few poetry magazines. The returned it with a curt "Sorry, can't use" rejection letter.

    Sigh.
