I'll mention what is in my opinion the biggest weaponry advance in the civil war, the gatling gun. It was invented by Richard Gatling in 1861, and first used by the union army in 1862. As the first "true" machine gun, it's usefulness in the civil war is fairly obvious. The gatling gun was a wheeled device similar looking to some artillery units of the time, it was a hand cranked device with a very high rate of fire for the time. Though it may not have utility in its original form any more, the principles of the gatling gun are still used today in airplane technology and weaponry, as the gatling gun's design allows for a high rate of fire without overheating, something useful in weapon design to this day.

Look up "Parrot gun," "ironclad," "screw propeller," "air force (hot-air balloon)" "movable turrets," "Gatling gun," "Spencer rifle," "CSS Huntley," "USS Monitor," that should get you started.
