I quit drinking 13 yrs. ago. I was told by "old timers" in AA that the?

13th year of sobriety is one of the more difficult. In an effort to avoid TRAPS, I'd like to know just why year 13 is so difficult?? It seems to be no different thus far. Any insights would be appreciated.

There are statistics that prove that quite a few people that get 13 years don't make it to 14 years, either they slip, or they fall away from meetings thinking that they don't need them anymore. I see friends from meetings and ask why they don't go anymore, and most say that they got tired of hearing the disease in the meetings, or that they can maintain their own sobriety without alot of meetings. I feel that both responses are selfish and short-sighted because i continue to go to meetings to give it away, i sponsor 7 guys right now and 6 are doing really well. As for the disease in the meetings, if all they oldtimers weren't there to show newbies how to share & behave responsibly-show them the road they need to take, there would be alot of lost drunks with no hope of freedom, huh?

When i started out-they said the road gets narrower & they were not kidding! Keep attending meetings, give it away to keep it, stay involved, shine the light of hope.

I suspect because by year 13 a lot of people believe they are all safe and that they can start drinking again.

But that aside, there is superstition around the number 13.

That is utter nonsense. Don't believe it. I don't personally think it helps to be obsessing about drinking so many years after you've quit. But then I've left AA altogether and have found that the things the oldtimers said to me about not being able to stay sober without meetings is also not true.

    Enjoy your life!

Thats strange never heard that. Must be because 13 is an unlucky number. Keep up the good work on being sober.

I believe that would be a case by case thing. Don't worry about it if you are doing fine!
