Sharapova, worthy "Number 1 "?

Most know I personally dont care too much for the over rated, over media sensationalized, self absorbed, vain, Sharapova. However, feelings aside, I dont think she is goign to be in the top spot, thanks to Henin, for too long as her previous very short stint on the top. She doesnt win tourneys as often as most think. After a loss, cries injury, and despite being consistent getting to semis and finals, doesnt win them. Let us also remember in reality, she has 3 slams to her credit, not anymore, though many think, assumes, that she does. The top 4 women are seperated by just 380 points, with Serena just 1000 back, and having already won a handful of tournaments thus far this season, so again I dont think Maria's stay will be too long on the top of the rankings. Especially with clay court season here and she doesnt move that well on it. Come Wimby time I expect her to pretty much dominate for the most part. Do you think she will remain number one for a respected, long period of time. Why?

Update:

She might barely be 21, but handfuls before her won more slams, tournaments, with a lower profile, lack of media attention. Also why just mention Williams Sisters? Hingis won more ata young age, and forget age, point is she gets way too much exposure for a slightly above average athlete.

Sharapova is the most consistent among current female tennis player. She has been in the top 10 (mostly top 5!) since winning Wimbledon in 2004 until now. the longest of any current female tennis players. Williams sisters are inconsistent in ranking and got too many injuries.

Can you think any other girl more deserving than Sharapova? This year is an excellent year for her, winning one more slam. Ivanovic is overrated. her ranking is way too inflated. Jankovic is not ready yet. Kuznetsova is way too inconsistent. Mauresmo is almost gone.

So Sharapova is definitely deserves her no 1 spot.

I think she is a worthy "Number 1" bcoz she is so consistent, persistent & have a winner mentality where others dont have...she surely give all her 100% when she's on court, seldom letting others to win easily though there may times she's not at her elements...but 3 Slams at 20, is surely a remarkable and phenomenon achievement especially nowadays where so many talented young players around...remember Steffi Graff, one of the all-time great players, where her true grits and winning mentality always prevails...

Every single tennis player is worthy as long as they work for it. Sharapova has been in the Top 10 for 4 years.. longest of any current female tennis player.

well do u see any other worthy players???? serena and venus may have greater accomplishments but hey they're goin downhill. they've peaked and they've already shown us their inconsistency difficulties over teh past years and right now they don't deserve #1 because they're not playing like it. i do agree with you that serena has been winning recently but because he ranking was trailing too far back she got a lot of catching up to do. lets look at the other top players.

according to your specs neither ivanovic, jankovic nore sveta deserves the spot because none of them have won slams or have had great accomplishments so accoridng to you there shouldn't even be a #1 spot right?

the reason why sharapova is able to stay atop is because she would be considered "consistent" amongst the other players because despite her injuries tourney loss etc, she is able to stay there because whenever she is in top form, she is able to go deep into the tourney.

You seem to forget that Maria won her third slam by the age of 20, which is 3 more than Venus Williams won at the same age, and 2 more than Serena did. She deserves to be #1 because she has earned the ponts to be there, now that Henin has called it quits. And she's still barely 21. I think her time at the top will be a healthy one.

I think Sharapova will be No.1.

Is she a worthy No. 1?. Shout it from the rooftops NO.

Sad day for tennis when we have the cheats (and gamesmanship does bring the game down) getting accolades.

Navaratilova said "Sharipova often grunts after she hits the ball. It is necessary to hear the ball hit the raquet if you are a finesse player. Sharipova with all her grunts and screams stops this happening".

i can think of many other #1 players on both mens and womens less qualify then Sharapova. however, they all short-lived on the top spot. the competition will eventually determind how good she is. we'll see.

actually ubertwink, svetlana has too won a slam....remember the us open 2004?

i dunno, for me,maria is worthy because if you really look, she was actually the second best player in the slams. whether or not she will stay,in the long run,i just think there is too much competition.

I say by the end of wimbledon it will be gone. She only got it not because ivanovic lost too many points at the last two tournaments but both players will have loads of competetion after they lose points at rg and at wimby.

I'm not to sure I think she plays great so she has a good shot
