Natural bird repellent?
Is there a natural substance that can be used to keep birds out of hanging flower pots? I DO NOT want to hurt them or make them sick, I just need some tips as to what they might hate and not want to come around. Husband and I love the birds and try to ATTRACT them, but we have a friend that wants to keep them out of the flowerpots...so in effect, we know how to attract them, but not shoo them away.
Thanks!
And please keep in mind that we don't want ot hurt them so please no stupid responses like "poison or kill" them. That's assinine and not the answers I'm looking for.
I'm sure the birds aren't hurting the flowers, but every time she goes out to tend the flowers, they come flying out of the nest and scare her.
She's elderly and can't handle that kind of scare...HAHA!
Seriously...she likes the birds but they scare her. Fortunately she's a compassionate lady and doesn't want to exterminate them...just shoo them away so them and their babies don't make her fall off of her porch and break a hip.
Thanks for the answers so far!

You can hang shiny pie pans etc in the area. There are some bird repellants for sale usually they have a large eye on them, also plastic owls will work if you move them around and do not let the birds get used to them.

A model of a cat or an owl or other bird of prey.
Hanging over the flowerpots saying 'shoo shoo shoo' also works quite well.

well if they have a nest there, wait for them to raise their babies (any time now!) and when the nest is empty, destroy it. after that, put stuff around it so there is not good place for nests there, or watch it carefully and destory it or cover the area when the birds just *start* nesting, like on the first day they start carrying twigs there. once the lady bird sits in the nest it is too late, she needs to lay her eggs.

I agree the appropriate answer may be to feed your canine interior. you may attempt to place some flags or mobiles (something moving) on the brink of the canine' food to behave as a deterrent yet some birds would desensitize to it and are available close besides.
