For anyone who has been to Ocean City...?
I am planning a vacation for my family this summer. We are a family of 4 with two children who are age 4. Any recommendations as to things we should see or do while we are in Ocean City, MD? Hubby and boys have never seen the ocean. I heard there is a zoo nearby with free admission. I'm not real keen on taking the kids to Assateague Island to be bitten by any wild horses. We are thinking of a campground nearby called Fort Whaley. Any other suggestions? Also, I read that August is the season with the most rain (5 inches on average) so I'm hoping that doesn't hinder our trip. Anyone know? Thanks in advance!

In all honesty....rain...so very frequent. August may statistically be the most (dunno about it?) but Delmarva as a whole gets more than it's fair share of rain.
Never heard of any local zoo's other than the one located in Salisbury, MD (about 30 miles West of Ocean City). It's called the Salisbury Zoological Park and is available for contact via 410-548-3188. A quick glance at the Zoo section of the OC Localbook says it's the only one around.
As to Fort Whaley, it's roughly 20 minutes away in sort of a mid point between Ocean City and Salisbury.
As to Assateague Island, just as with camping....bring OFF (lots of OFF) for the skeeters.

My wife and I frequent Assateague and Chincotegue Islands every year. I assure you the horses are not a danger. For one thing, you aren't even suppose to touch them. They typically keep to themselves. In Chincotegue, when they round up the VA heard, you are actually invited to go up to them. No one gets bit.

To the first answerer-- OC is pretty much a year 'round resort now. Never is "everything" closed. My wife and I only go off season because of the ridiculous crowds in the summer. True-- a lot MORE is open doing season.

Oh, i've got been there. you should deliver funds, by way of fact there's a boardwalk with a lot of figuring out to purchase oppurtunities, there is likewise a small (yet exciting) amusement park. Swimsutits, sea coast Towels, and Sunscreen. deliver Shirts, Shorts/Pants, Socks, undies, Razor (not sure of your age), brush/comb, Shampoo, cleansing soap, Deoderant/anti-perspirant, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and probably a e book/magazine/headphones to study/hear to on your way up. have exciting!

I've been there, but it was winter so everything was closed, we only stayed a few days and only saw the beach. But my husband grew up near there and says it gets very busy during the summer so prepare for it to be busy, plan in advanced if your going to stay in a hotel, they go fast.
