What should I do when the Catholic Church and the Bible don't jive.?

Look at the big picture and they always jive.

The Bible does not specifically condemn slavery. But the Catholic Church after studying the Bible for about 1,450 years realized the slavery was against the overall big picture that God is trying to teach us. The Catholic Church condemned slavery 30 years before Columbus "discovered" America.

We call this form of doctrine Holy Tradition.

I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. (John 16:12-13)

Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours. (2 Thessalonians 2:15)

We instruct you, brothers, in the name of (our) Lord Jesus Christ,to shun any brother who conducts himself in a disorderly way and not according to the tradition they received from us. (2 Thessalonians 3:6)

I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions, just as I handed them on to you. (1 Corinthians 11:2)

The Catholic Church does not use Holy Scripture as the only basis of doctrine. It could not. The early Catholic church existed before and during the time that the New Testament was written (by Catholics).

There were hundreds of Christian writings during the first and second centuries. Which New Testament writings would become official was not fully decided until about 400 C.E.

Catholics believe that the Holy Spirit was guiding the early church (and is guiding the church today) to make the correct choices about things like:

    • The Holy Trinity (which is also only hinted at in the Bible)

    • Going to church on Sunday instead of Saturday (which is actually directly against one of the Ten Commandments)

    • The Communion of Saints

    • Which writings include in the New Testament?

Things that are even more modern like

    • Slavery is bad. Slavery is never declared evil in the Bible. This was one of the justifications for slavery in the Confederate States.

    • Democracy is good. The Bible states that either God should be the leader of the nation like Israel before the kings or kings should be the leader, "Give to Caesar that which is Caesar's." This was talked about a lot during the American Revolution.

This second source of doctrine is called Apostolic Tradition.

You'll find your answer in 2 Thessalonians 2:15. "Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours."

So, since the Catholic Church was founded before the Bible was written, I'd say to do as Paul says in 2Thessalonians. Follow the oral and written traditions that have been passed down through the only human organization I know of that has lasted for 2000+ years - the Catholic Church - a certain testament of the Power of the Holy Spirit, don't you think? I don't think there is a group of humans alive that could pull that off by themselves! . . . we'd bicker too much :-)

Another thought: the Bible was written to address certain discrepancies that arose among believers, and to pass on the teachings of Our Lord without having to be physically present, but, as Paul just said in 2 Thessalonians 2:15 - it's not the whole answer. So, if the Catholic Church and the Bible don't seem to jive to you, I'd suggest you research a little further . . . I'm sure you'll find that they DO jive - always. Just listen to Paul, and the Holy Spirit will guide you to His answers. You might not like them, but they are there.

"Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours."

Btw, as you do your research, you'll find that it's only when you look to the Bible without any other references that you'll find discrepancies. Because, although the Bible is the Inspired Word of God, it is not the ONLY Word. In fact, nowhere in the Bible does it say that the Bible IS the ONLY word of God.

Check it out, you'll see there's a discrepancy between what some Christian churches teach, and the written Word. You just saw where the Word says in 2 Thessalonians 2:15. "Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours." Yet, this is not what some Christian churches teach, they teach that the Bible is the ONLY word of God - even though that idea is never mentioned in the Bible, not once.

Catholics teach that the Bible is the Inspired Word of God, and it's backed up by the Bible itself: what more proof do you need?

If you were Catholic, I would suggest you ask your priest, parents or friends. If you don't feel like asking them, you look in the catechism. It's full of biblical references for why we do what we do. Any Catholic should know this....

Please stop misrepresenting yourself..... So many of your questions are insanely anti-Catholic. You aren't a Jack Chick follower, are you?

If you are a non-Catholic and you think the Church and the bible don't "jive". Find out if what you believe about the Church is true. Then ask if we have a scriptural basis.

Long tale. I used to be Baptist and I do not knock the Baptist Church, however there used to be some thing lacking in my existence. And so the Holy Spirit lead me to the Catholic church now not as a organization believer however simply in order that I would move and come to be Catholic. I used to be now not going to visit Mass each and every Sunday or not anything like that however I made up our minds to take the RCIA categories. Then within the method I grew to become toward Jesus and discovered that this used to be his church. Everything that I had heard bad approximately the church used to be considering individuals didn't appreciate. By the sacrements, holy communion and confession I have the possibility to come back toward our Lord and Savior. Praying the rosary everyday has additionally helped me in my travel in the direction of Chirst. I would say extra, for this is a lengthy tale. God Bless.

    Got any examples?

The Catholic Church generally jives with the Bible, so this is kind of a non-issue. If you think there are discrepancies, you either don't know Catholic theology/practice/teaching very well or you've never even bothered to check it out.

The Catholic Church is the most biblical of all Christian faiths. What is it about the Church and the Bible that does not jibe?

A Christian is one who faithfully follows the teachings of Jesus. Acts 11,26 defines Christian an "adherent" of Christ.

Based on this Biblical definition, many Protestant denominations are not Christian because they do not follow all the teachings of Christ.

Here are some doctrines, which many Protestant denominations approve of, which are clearly against Christ's teachings.

    + Pre-marital sex

    + Same sex partnerships

    + Contraception

    + Abortion

    + Divorce

+ Private doctrinal interpretation of the Bible

+ Protestants also believe in the 'once saved always saved' doctrine. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you will go to heaven just the same even if you have committed a serious crime.

These are just a few unchristian and unbilical teachings of Protestantism. There are at least half a dozen more, which I did not list.

On the other hand, Catholics are Christians because we are expected to follow ALL the teachings of Jesus Christ. Of course, some Catholics don’t follow all Church teachings, that can not be avoided.

Challenge to Protestants: Give me one teaching of Jesus, which the Catholic Church does not follow. If you can find one I will re-convert to your faith.

You will find that most of what the Catholic Church believes and practices doesn't jive with the Bible. The fact that you are asking the question tells me that you are troubled about it and if you are troubled, I would suggest that you leave. Find a church that follows Jesus Christ and Scripture in word, deed and faith. Take into consideration the following Scriptures and compare them with the Catholic Church. The Catholic Mass crucifies Jesus over and over and over again but He has died once for all. No where in Scripture is the worship of Mary found. Check out the Catholic 10 Commandments. You will find that the second commandment has been eliminated and the last commandment has been split up to bring it back to ten again. If you want more information, feel free to email me.

2Co 6:15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?

2Co 6:16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, "I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.

2Co 6:17 "Therefore, COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE," says the Lord. "AND DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN; And I will welcome you.
