math problem help!?

here is the problem if the permieter of the rectangle is 36 and the width is 4 what is the lenth ( show steps meaning what you do to both sides )

Update:

Thankyouu so much Matt S !

that was exactly what i was looking for and what my teacher taught me, but i just forgot but thanks everyone else too for answering my math questionn !

    ok very simple.

    first the formula is P=2L + 2w

    if the P is 36 and the width is 4 we can fill them in:

    36=2L+ 2(4)

    36=2L + 8

    -8 -8

    28=2L

    14=Length !!!!

    36 = Width 1 + Width 2 + Height 1 + Height 2

    Therefore since a recangle has two pairs of identical sides that are different from one another, we know that

    36 = 4 + 4 + Height 1 + Height 2

    So

    36 = 8 + H1 + H2

    So 8 out of the 36 is the two widths.

    36 - 8 = 8 + H1 + H2 - 8

    28 = H1 + H2

    Since H1 and H2 are the same (they are a pair of sides) you could say that 28 = Hx2

    So to get H you can divide it all by 2

    28 divided by 2 = Hx2 divided by 2

    14 = H

    Hope that helps : )

    Well just think...to find perimiter the formula is all sides added together. so what I would do is add 4+4 (cause you know that the other width on the otherside is 4 too) that equalls 8 then minus 8 from 36 and that is 28. divide that by 2 ( to get both legths) then you get 14. so 14 is the length.

    36-4= 32-4= 28 divided by 2 equals 14. the length is 14

    You need to write an equation. You know that a perimeter is (length + width) * 2, so your equation (plugging in 4 for width) will be:

    (length + 4) * 2 = 36

    2*length + 2*4 = 36

    2*length + 8 = 36

    2*length = 36-8

    2*length = 28

    length = 28/2

    length = 14

    ok so if the width is 4 that would mean the sum of the 2 widths is 8...subtract that from 36 and you get 28...each PARALLEL sides of rectangles are equal so divide 28 by two and you get 14:)

    P-perimeter

    L-length

    W-width

    P = 2L+ 2W

    solve for L, move 2W to the P's side and divide the whole thing by 2

    L = (P - 2W) / 2

    substitute P = 36, W = 4

    L = (36 - 2 x 4) / 2 = 14 <---your answer

    answer is 14

    i took perimeter of 36 and subtracted 8 (4 on two sides)

    i was left with 28 and two more sides divide 28 by 2 and you get 14

    well perimeter means the length of all the sides added together(the distance around the object).

    so, you know one side is 4, well the opposite side of the side labeled 4, would be 4 as well. which means X=4. this means you take the one side and times it by two...4x2. you need to find the length. so you would do Yx2 as well.

    4x2+Yx2=36

    .....

    4x2=8

    Yx2=2Y

    ......

    8+2Y=36

    then you subtract 8 from 36

    .......

    2Y=36-8

    .......

    2Y=28

    then divide 28 by 2

    .........

    Y=28/2

    ..........

    Y=14

    so your missing length is 14.

    hope i helped.

    perimeter of a reglangle is... X(2)+Y(2).

    X and Y are the side lenghts.
