why do they call them "bumle bee's"?
you know, those BIG black and sometimes yellow bee's, that bump into everything and are big as horse flies, and why do they call them "bumble" anyway???

with the description of the color and flight habits you are describing ,sounds more like the male carpenter bee rather than bumble bees

I always assumed it was because they are not the most graceful fliers.....compared with a honey bee.
Also bumble may come from a old English word for humming.....I would have called them "mumble bee" as they seem to be talking to themselves as they go about their business.

A definition of the word "bumble" is to make a humming or droning sound -- to buzz.

I think it's because they are clumsy and bumble around. They live in holes in the ground.
