well, you can buy algaewafers! your black fish, of, most likley the one you are talking about would be the pleco's, if so, most likely your fish would love them!!

This is most likely what you are talking about..

    http://www.malawicichlidhomepage.com/aquainfo/Comm...

They are called Plecotomus's, or Pleco for short.

Simply feed them algaewafers to fix the problem... oh and a warning, Pleco's can grow up to 12 inches long, and pleco's are noctural, so that means that while your fish are inactive, your pleco will have a chance to nibble and stress your fish to death. But ussualy that is not a problem, Best of regards!

Don't worry I know the best solution for your problem.I'm not going to get into detail about this .

Mostly this fish are omnivorous and they will eat eventually everything debris and food leftover after be consumed by other fish.

You can try to feed the fish with:

    1. tetra algae tablets, flake, pellet and even green food.

    2.frozen food.

    3.mircoworms or bloodworms.

Try to buy the sinking type as you know these fish are bottom eater.

They can be found in most fish retailer outlet.

    Feeding Suggestions:

Feed only the amount your fish will completely consume within one (1) hour. Care should be taken to avoid over-feeding. Some tropical fish resist a new type of food when changing their diet, continued use will ensure acceptance.

And also I would suggest you to feed two times a day if your fish is big like mine mainly around one feet long .But however if you catfish is small like the Corydoras you can feed them 3 -4 times a week depending on its consumption.

Hope my suggestion may help you on your problem

Don't worry we have three. When the tank is clean go to the store and get these algea eating disks just ask the people at the petstore cause it's usally behind the counter. But its cheap & they float down the algae eaters like kinda swallow them & when they hit water they increase the algae. give them some once a day. If its a little one then just 1 or 2 will do at each feeding, meduim then 3 at the most 4 and large 4-5. but the larger ones only get fed once a day. Sorry about the length.

You are right, a pleco cant live forever on algae and leftovers.

Common plecos do well on a mix of algae wafers, fresh veges (cucumber, zuchini and mushroom are good starters) and a bit of higher protien food as well (left over flake food or sinking shrimp pellets)

They should be fed mostly on vege based food, but a bit of higher protein stuff is good for them.

Be warned, they do grow to at least a foot long, and can live for 15 years or more.

I have seen these fish get really big in the wild and in ponds like at theme parks. It will eat the flake food once it falls to the bottom of the tank as well as keep it clean from the algae that forms. try searching the web I got this info below for you to view, hope it helps kdm

An adult "giant algae sucker", Hypostomus plecostomus.

A young algae eater attached to the side of the aquarium glass.Plecostomus, pleco, algae eater, or algae sucker, is a general name for a type of freshwater tropical Central and South American fish belonging to the family Loricariidae. Algae eaters are extremely popular in aquaria for their ability to clean tanks by eating algae growth. These fish are typically sold at about 8 cm (3 inches) and may grow up to 60 cm (2 feet), and a few species can reach even more. A relatively new species is hardy and grows to a maximum of 10 cm (4 inches)[citation needed], an ideal size for small to average size tanks.

Plecos are omnivorous but, in the wild, feed mostly on plant material at night. During the day, their unusual omega irises block a lot of the light out of their eyes. The iris opens at night. They can also wink by rolling the eye into the head.

As they age, their foreheads enlarge in a peculiar manner. Plecos can become more territorial and are best kept individually in tanks. Because of their large size and territorial behaviour, when stocking smaller aquaria it is often better to consider a bristlenose catfish (Ancistrus), which generally grow to about 15 cm (6 inches), are very peaceable, and also eat algae. In a suitably large tank a solitary plecostomus will live amicably enough in a community tank alongside other tropical fish. These catfish can be kept in tanks with "cold-water" species like goldfish, Carassius auratus, these tanks need to be heated however.

There are a number of species that are sold on the market under the name common algae sucker, including Hypostomus plecostomus, Hypostomus punctatus, Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus, and Pterygoplichthys pardalis.

A maturing plecostomus sucking to a aquarium ornament. There are many types of suckermouth armoured catfishes that science has not described. As a result, they are given a common name and an L-number designation until a new scientific name for the fish is described. An example is the flash plecostomus, L204, believed to be a species of Panaque.

Plecostomus catfish are some of the most commonly kept algae-eating catfish, and are also some of the largest. Individuals measuring over 60 cm (2 feet) long have been reported in ponds and large tanks; Most people think they only grow large enough for their aquarium, but a small tank may only slow their rate of growth. Their growth may also become stunted in a smaller tank, leading to bad health and possibly an early death.

    [edit] Etymology

The name "Plecostomus" means "folded" (pleco, see pleat) "mouth" (stomas, see stomach), but it has since been applied to any of a large number of species that have a similar shape, but vary widely in terms of maximum length, coloration, and certain body features such as the "horns" on the bristlenose catfishes (genus Ancistrus).

    [edit] Territorial Behavior

A maturing plecostomus sucking to a aquarium wall.Plecos, when introduced to an aquarium, will often find a permanent resting place (under or inside an ornament or rock, for example) to spend most of its time. This becomes a "home" for the Plecostomus. If there are no hiding places, they will sleep on the corner of their tank.

They will clean up after other fish or eat left over food in the tanks so do not worry to much at least the water is not green.

The beta shouldn't bother any fish other than another male beta. That's why they were called "Siamese Fighting Fish" back in the day. Don't worry, Sucker will be safe!
