In the Qu'ran?

Muslims are taught that honesty is mandated, one believer to another, but to the infidel any lie is permissable. Can someone tell me where (chaper and verse) that can be found in the Islamic text?

    peace aviator147,

do not succumb to lies propogated in the name of islam. is it so difficult to find real fault with the religion?

    allah says in the quran:

    (005:008)

O ye who believe! stand out firmly for Allah, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.

perhaps you are referring to the following allowance:

    (016:106)

Any one who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters Unbelief,- except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith - but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty.

when one is severely oppressed and fears for his life. then there is no blame on such a person if he renounces his faith (only in speech) to save his life. however, if he becomes a witness and a martyr for the faith, then he is rewarded. the prophet (peace be upon him said):

"The greatest jihad is to speak the word of truth to a tyrant"

    --- edit # 2 ---

in certain minority sects of islam there are more elaborate constructs. however, in the mainstream islamic tradition followed by the majority of muslims globally the quranic injunctions above are sufficiently clear.

may god guide us to the straight path
