Any President needs to stay close to his or her secret service protection. there are potential assassins from all sides of the political spectrum, and others who would kill a President just to make a name for themselves or because they are delusional and blame the president for some imaginary injustice against them.

One reason I don't believe that any President who didn't serve in the military is a coward is because US Presidents have been shot or killed at a rate that is higher than one's odds of being killed in the military.
