Math problem question..... please help?

Ok this is REALLY embarresing

well im doing my math homework.... Order of Operations. Then I got to this dividing part. I did it on the paper ( we can use calculators BUT we NEED to show our work) but something happened...........

the equation was 90(divided by ) 8 and when I did it manually I got 11 remander 2

but when I did it on calculator it was 11 remander 25 or 11.25. Why did it become .25 other than .2

When you divided on paper, you had 2 left over, stopped, and called it Remainder 2.

When you used the calculator, it used decimal format and took the process one further step to give you .25.

Using paper and long division, divide 90.00 by 8, and you will get the same 11.25 that the calculator did.

What you did on paper is correct. If you wanted to answer the question using decimals, then you would have needed to add a decimal after the 90 and then add at least 2 more zeros. So you would have 90.00 divided by 8. Then you would not have a remainder, it would become 11.25. .25 is like a quarter. It is worth 25 cents, which is 1 fourth of a dollar. Well it is also the 2 in your remainder of 2. Because if you would have written the answer in fraction form you would have gotten 11 and 2/8. The 2/8 reduces to 1/4 which is 1 fourth. The same as .25. Since your calculator did not answer in fraction form, it answered in decimal form which was 11.25. I hope that this helps.

it because when you did long divison it is a different answer than when you do it on a caclulator. the .25 is a decimal, not a remainder. it is also a fraction, .25 means 25/100 or when reduced it is 1/4 the remainder should not be considered as .2 because it is completely different than a decimal. but for your information .2 is also .20 which as a fraction is 20/100 when reduced is 1/5. if you want to write your answer as interger with a decimal rather than a remainder, then put your remainder over what the number you are dividing by. in this case it would be 2/8 which reduces to 1/4 which is .25

    hope that makes sense

    bcuz 11.25 goes exactly into 90, when u got 11 remainder 2, u didnt complete it, i bet u still had a 4 left over (20-16=4) so u add a zero & it becomes 40 & thats where u get the 5 in 11.25 & theres ur answer:)

its 11 with the remander of 2

Well the remainder is a fraction of wat u divided the number by

So since u divided 90 by 8 ans u got remainder 2, to get the decimal 25 you convert the fraction u get (2/8) into a decimal and slap it on the back of the number

    2/8=1/4=.25

ok ok the calculator went a step further then u did. 8 goes in to 9 one time. then u do ur subtraction and u getta 10 then u do sum more and then u end up with 20 and thats where u got ur 2... so add another decimal place to it... 8x2=1620-16=40...8 goes in to 405... giving u the answer of 11.25

maybe you rounded the remainder it is basically the same thing as what you got but I am not positive about that

when in doubt trust the calculator

    90/8=11.25

    there is your answer

i think the calculator just did it more exact probably.
