The dog in the movie is a Yellow Lab. I think that the breed of the dog in the book is questionable and only specifically mentioned as a "Mountain Cur" which is different than a Black Mouthed Cur. The Blue Lacy is also said to have influenced Gipson in the writing of the book Old Yeller.

The color of the Black Mouth Cur is usually yellow. Often he is called the Yellow Black Mouth Cur. As a matter of fact, the Disney Movie "Old Yeller" used a black Mouth Cur as the dog in the movie. A black muzzle is the reason for his name and is the preferred marking. He also will have low hanging black ears. The coat can be of two types, double or single but must be yellow. The tail if not docked is quite long. When the Black Mouth Cur hits a scent and moves out he can spring from a walk to a full out ground covering stride easily and has the stamina to continue this for many miles. Many of his admirers feel that he is among the swiftest of the trailing scent hounds of the Southern States.

Mountain Cur, although not a typical specimen.. The book "Old Yeller" - about a boy growing up in frontier Texas and a dog for which the book is named, is a typical Mountain Cur (unlike the movie, which starred a dog of Lab type). In the book, Old Yeller is a short-haired, yellow bobtailed dog that hunts and trees, isn't afraid to fight a full-grown bear when it is threatened, and naturally goes for the nose when he faces a mad bull. IN the movie he was a shelter mutt rescued for $3.

Old Yeller was a Lacy Cur which just happens to be the State Dog of Texas. I own a Lacy Cur so I have done a lot of research on the breed. This breed was specifically bred by the Lacy family to corral feral hogs. The Lacy family were ranchers in Hill Country and the author resided in the same geographic area --- during or shortly after that time.

I think it is funny how at the end of Old Yeller - they show a lab like/Blackmouth Cur kind of pup (like Old Yeller is supposed to be) and then in Savage Sam he is played by a Bluetick Coonhound. Was Savage Sam another pup from the litter? I know he couldn't have changed colors - lol. The mama dog was speckled like a Bluetick also.

In the movie the, Yeller was a Lab/Mastiff mix named Spike. But in the book it refers to the dog being a Curr dog. No matter though it was an amazing movie

Old yeller was a black mouth cur. In the book and in the movie. The information can be found on Disney's website, including the name of the starring dog.

A yellow lab. The labs we have today look a little different. They are taller and thiner. The English labs are more of what Old Yeller was.

there have been lots of questions on this
originally he was a black mouth cur-in the book
but watching the way he moved cows in the movie i would guess lab and pit bull mixed as pit bulls when they where originally bred where bred to bring down bulls by the nose for the butchers and when he bulldogs the cow in the move he does just that
