What's up with the thumbs down?

In going back and looking at some questions I have answered to see what other's have come up with, I have noticed that some people just have to give thumbs down to some really good answers. Why do they feel the need? Is it because they think thier answer has a better chance of being voted best?

I certainly don't vote that way. Do you?

Update:

Now I'm reviewing and , hey, everyone but Roger has at least 1 thumb down! Go figure. Lots of sarcastic ne'er do wells out there. That was my point exactly.

(Roger, do not fear, I'm sure your stalker will get you soon)

Update 2:

Sam, I am far removed from being a child and, especially "your" dear one.

I wish that yahoo would get rid of the thumbs all together!!

its so stupid anyway!! I have one guy who follows me around just to give me thumb down...

    its coming....and hereeeeeeeeeeeeeeere it is!!!!

  • I've often wondered this myself. I see some really great answers being given a thumbs down and I think, what was the point of that??

Personally, I usually only give thumbs up to an answer that I either agree with or thought was really well put. I don't give thumbs down to answers I don't agree with, but only will give it when it's realllllly horribly bad advice.

Thumbs up or thumbs down has no bearing on the way I vote. I vote for the answer I think best addresses the question.

No! I don't understand it, either. I often give thumbs down to answers in the relationships section when I feel that the person is giving bad advice, but otherwise I only thumbs down BAD answers!

Many times it's the trolls creeping around with not much else to do. Intelligent consideration is just not an option for them.

Don't give it much thought...they certainly haven't earned it.

I'm not sure what the purpose is. I have had this happen to me quite a few times. I really don't think it has anything to do with voting, I think they either really don't like what I have to say or they are just being jerky jerks.

Here's why I give thumbs down.

    When someone answers with:

1)IDK (or any form of it)

2)Thanks for asking that because I want to know too.

3)They answer, but end it with Pick me Pick me!

4)When someone posts a link to one of their questions in the answer. RUDE!

5)Profanity is used in a derogatory way.

6)When someone below me CLEARLY has copied and pasted my answer for theirs.

I have NO idea why people do that - I answered one that asked what makes you happy I said my kids and got a thumbs down.

But no I do not do that.

I personally vote for someone who provides the most general and useful information without making the whole thing to turn out into a six page report on the great uses for (*brainstorming* oh I got it how about) a toothbrush. I think most people just do it as a little way of making their chances better to get a "best answer vote" Just like when people write smileys ; ) like that one <---- and stuff like "have fun" or "keep up the good work" it's just a way of hoping they will like you and give you the best answer! and again I don't really care who i vote for unless its one of those total idiots who write crude comments and remarks. And to add to that i think when people do that their being just plain stupid and the arent helping with things at all.

altogether though I think the whole thing is clever though because its a great way of giving feedback and "thumbs down" to people who answer stupidly on purpose or "thumbs up" for a great and useful answer!
