Hampton, Richmond or Roanoke, VA areas?
I'm thinking of moving to VA soon and am wondering which one of these areas is best (safest)? I also need colleges and computer tech jobs within 30 miles or so.
Thank you!

Roanoke and Richmond would be safer than Hampton, though Hampton isn't terrible. Richmond would be your best bet for a tech job and colleges. Richmond is a nice place to live, I lived there for several years up until a few months ago.
If you are looking for housing values (either to buy or rent) take a look at what is commonly referred to as "the southside" which is the area south of the James river. It is a nice area and housing is considerably cheaper than other areas. The West End is the most expensive, though the most popular area. I lived on the southside and loved it. It was convenient to everything, plenty of amenities around, the nicest shopping mall in the area is on the Southside... lots of reasons to like it there.

Norfolk is VA Beach's next door neighbor. None of the cities you listed are within the 20-30 min range of VA Beach.
