Travel / health insurance within UK?

Do I need to purchase health insurance to travel from Belfast to mainland UK. I am a British citizen, born and living in Northern Ireland.

    no, you don't NEED to

you've got to ask what would be the point ... your medical treatment, obviously, would be covered by NHS ... any additional cost from you getting ill would be things like anyone travelling with you having to stay in a hotel while you were in hospital, additional cost of travel arrangements that had been disrupted by the illness (for instance if your flight couldn't be changed and you had to re-book), additional travel costs if you need some special travel arrangements to get home (e.g. if you'd broken your back or something)

what are the likelihood of any of these, how is your general health, and how much would the insurance cost?

my travel insurance only covers me if I'm travelling abroad, it doesn't cover me in the UK ... and last time I looked NI is still inside the UK, it's not "abroad"

personally (despite getting on in years and not being in A1 health) I've never even contemplated taking out travel insurance within the UK ... if it should ever happen I'll just have to face whatever additional costs there might be as I just don't think it's worth it

It is advisable, because if you have an accident and need to get something like the air ambulance to take you back home you will not be able to do so on the NHS.

No, you are entitled to the same health facilities throughout the UK including NI. I don't see the NHS charging any more to get someone home to NI than they would to get someone back to Inverness who'd ended up in hospital in Cornwall.
