What happens IF prior to the national election one of the two candidates would die?

With McCain's age and volatility, I started thinking "what if he died or had a massive stroke prior to the election?" How would we procede? Would the specific party begin the primary process again?

Please...serious answers.

Dead people have appeared on ballots before (including the US Senate races) so I think the election would proceed as planned, and if the dead candidate won, his Veep would get sworn in as VP first, and then seeing the President-elect was unable to take the oath of office, would then assume the office of the POTUS

The party would name a new person to represent them. In McCains party I have no idea who they would get maybe Edwards ( as he is a viable candidate with a good following).

If it happened after the election before him taking office the vice-president elect would be the president.

Soooooooooo..... The picking of McCains vice president is the single deciding factor left for me.

If the Democratic Party does not seat Michigan's delegates I will vote for McCain unless I am appalled by his choice for Vice President as there is a high chance that person will also be president.

The party leadership would choose a new nominee. It would presumably be the runner-up for the nomination or the VP choice (which could, of course, be the same person), but there's nothing official.

It's not entirely unprecedented -- in 1972, George McGovern's VP candidate, Thomas Eagleton, dropped out after it was revealed he had received electric shock treatments. The party leadership picked Sargent Shriver to replace him.

They'd probably put Romney in his place, he had the next highest amount of delegates. They couldn't redo the primary process with so little time, and since primaries aren't officially part of the election process, they can't postpone the election process.

They would have the party leaders vote between the candidates that were in the primaries

The party would run the next candidate with most delegates from the primaries.
