Baby wont sit or crawl :(?

My son was born 3 months early, in May last year although his due date wasnt until 22nd August.

Although it is his birthday next week, and he has a corrected age of 9 months he still wont sit by himself or crawl.

When I put him sitting he wants to stand up or scootch down so he is lying. We got him a bebepod seat but he just throws himself out of it, and a inflatable doughnut to sit in, but he just uses that like a recliner, and wont stay upright. I tried sitting him inbetween my legs too, but he just falls forwards or sideways still.

Also, he wont crawl, he has lots of tummy time, and lifts himself up on his hands very well but wont move anywhere, I keep putting toys infront of him, and moving his legs for him to show him but he isnt getting the hang of it at all.

Im getting a bit worried cos all the other babies we know that were born in august are walking, and were sitting and crawling months ago.

Any ideas?

Talk to your pediatrician. There may be a problem. My son was born one month premature and had delayed milestones which eventually led to a diagnosis of pervasive developmental delay (PDD). There are early intervention programs for infants and toddlers in most areas. If your doctor feels that an evaluation is warranted, take your son ASAP. The sooner you get help, the better. Good luck!

Even though your baby was a preemie, and his corrected age is 9 months, every baby develops at his own pace. My son used his Bumbo for two weeks before he started sitting on his own. Continue to encourage your baby to sit on his own- practice makes perfect after all.

And if it continues to bother you, schedule an appointment with your pediatrician about it. He or she will be able to give your further advice!

Crawling will come only after sitting unassisted. Providing lots of tummy time is still good, though! You will find that when your son is ready to start crawling, he will get on all fours and start rocking back and forth. This means that he is preparing his muscles for the work of crawling- the next natural step after that is crawling. My son rocked for about 3 weeks, but he was rolling and scootching to get to toys before that.

And my son doesn't walk yet- and he was born August 15th! Just let him take his time; it'll be okay!

Not to worry! It's so hard not to compare your baby with others his own age, but it's very dangerous - for you! My baby didn't sit up well until she was 7 months old, didn't crawl until she was 10 months old, she's now 14 months old and is still not walking!

You may want to check with your pediatrician at your next appointment, particularly regarding the sitting up, just to give yourself peace of mind and make sure your baby's development is not setting off any alarm bells, but chances are he will sit up when he's ready.

Don't compare your baby to anyone elses. I know that is hard.... My best friends son was born only 6 weeks early and he was not sitting and had just started rolling over at 8 months. He is now 9yo and a little video game wizard... really, the kids is a genius! But his mom was worried for him too. But, for what?

I am not sure the pre-mature thing but my son (born on time) didn't crawl till 10 1/2 months.
