a question about CELEBRITY ACTIVISM?

if a famous person (say, singer or actor for example) expresses a political point of view you are totally opposed too does it change the way you feel about them?

would it make it less likely that you would buy their cd's or see their films?

has any celebrity's activism changed the way you view them?

personally, the vast majority of the time i say no, but if it is something really, really, extreme ( like saying we deserved 9/ 11 ) then yes it would, but only in an extreme case like that.

    Personally ...

I do NOT pay any attention to anything that these 'celebrities' say -- they can't even put together a coherent sentence .. much less figure out that their 'opinion' doesn't matter any more than anyone else's opinion on the street!

I do NOT purchase DVDs/CDs or anything else of any of their 'products' -- because .. well ... they stink! They are not even worth my time.

And yes, I am INFURIATED by the OPEN prejudice and HATE expressed by some of these celebrities -- they are obviously being 'blessed' with American Dollars in earnings (for what -- is the question of the day) .. but seem to think that they can open their mouths and insult MY country .. the President, make insane statements about 9/11 (yep -- I have to agree with you there) ... insult our servicemembers (some do -- and that is horrific -- especially since the ones doing this do NOT even know what it means to actually VOLUNTEER to serve) ... and I do NOT want anyone pushing their 'personal agendas' down my throat through the FREE publicity of their antics on "news" programs too.

Source(s): An Empty-Nesting Single Retiree's own thoughts (and I happen to be Retired Military with siblings still serving) -- and I do NOT go to see movies, purchase CDs/DVDs, etc -- mainly because they are just NOT worth me spending MY HARD EARNED Income on in the first place! Why should I WASTE my income on a very expensive trip to the theater or on a DVD if the end result is not only am I NOT entertained .. but I have to be OFFENDED by their outrageous comments too!

Being a celebrity, in the public eye pretty much constantly, carries a certain amount of social responsibility. Now, while I don't agree that what goes on in a celebrity's life should necessarily be fodder for every gossip rag that comes along, when a particular "star" decides to voluntarily open his mouth and pass air across his vocal chords for the sole purpose of communicating with his target audience, ie his fans, he has to consider whether the message he is about to convey is beneficial to his fans, his community, his country, humanity in general, or the world at large--or if he's liable to cause reckless harm instead. If the scales balance it's up to his own agenda whether he actually chooses to deliver his message or not. If Jo Hokum wants to stand in front of God and all of America and proclaim that soy burgers are the best thing since lentil stew, but Wonder Woman can kick Spider Man's @ss in a fair fight any day of the week in any arena, well who cares, except maybe beef farmers--but the damage there will really be minimal. If, however, Mather Jackson wants to stand in front of his fans and say that the only true way to purge oneself of mental illness is to go out and perform lewd acts with farm animals in the presence of young children....well, I hope you can see the far greater negative impact on society as a whole. 1. Mental patients foregoing traditional treatment, because Mather Jackson says its ineffective, whose conditions worsen to goodness only knows what degree, further compounded by the chicken/children debauchery 2. Those poor chickens 3. The chicken farmers who go bankrupt because really, who's going to buy/eat those chickens 4. The children who grow up warped because of what they've witnessed....and they can't get helped because Mather Jackson says therapy doesn't work, only chickens do. I'm far more likely to go ahead and support the work of Jo Hokum because, hokie as he is, he's still harmless. Mather Jackson, on the other hand, is on my blackball list because he's not only insane, he's socially irresponsible and downright dangerous. I know this is a way far out there example, I did that for effect--but I'm sure everyone can see my point.

Personally, I don't understand why celebrities think that people give a damn about their political views. Just because you are in the lime light, doesn't make your opinion any more important than anyone else's, so please just keep it to your self. Your purpose in life is to entertain, not publicly endorse this candidate or that. Also, since I'm more Republican than not, I rarely ever agree with what they say(especially since most have no real idea what they are talking about any ways).

No, because most of what they say is strictly to improve their PR. Perfect example: every single celebrity has jumped on the "Go Green" bandwagon. And I don't see them driving hybrid cars and using solar energy and owning a carbon neutral house and using energy efficient lightbulbs. (By the way all this "green" talk is driving me insane!! I can't escape it, I even have to hear about it when I go to the movies!) They'll do whatever it takes to make more money. Enough said.

properly, I do believe there are some activists who actual care in regards to the reasons they sell. Shakira, as an occasion. She's executed various charity artwork and that i infrequently ever see her interior the information for it, so as which could't be the reason she does it. i'm lots greater probable to question the reasons of the celebs who seem on television daily advertising for a charity.

Maybe not their activism so much as their actions. Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson are two actors I used to like, but their shenanigans have really soured me on anything they do.

Yes it bothers me I don't like celebrities who come out and say they HATE America. I don't watch certain people in movies for that reason.

Follow my mind not someone else's, particularly not an air head celebrity

it doesn't make a difference to me. i don't particularly care what political views they have. if i like their work, i will still check it out, even if they say something i totally disagree with.
