Peoples answers on here are so stupid... they guy just bought a 40 and you are putting him down for it. I have a 40 and I could not be more happy. Especially since the 80 is the one that freezes all the time per forums on playstation3.com
The 40 gb can play some ps1 games and it has 2 usb ports
the 80 gb has true BC (Backward Compatibility) to play most all ps1 and ps2 games. Also it has 4 usb ports in the front and a SD slot for your cameras.
Other then that they are exactly the same
I own a 40 and got it because i changed the hdd to a 200 gb and did not need 4 usb because i have an external remote control charger

The 40gb is basically the same. People only say it sucks because it can't play PS2 games. If that is something you want your PS3 to do, then I can see why you might feel that way, but it does everything else the exact same way. It can play PS3 games, PS1 games, bluray movies and DVDs just as well as the 80gb can.
The 40gb also has 2 fewer USB ports and no memory card readers, but these differences are negligible since you can get a USB hub and use a USB flash drive instead of an SD card if you want to transfer memory.
You can always upgrade the hard drive if you feel you need to.

you did a great choice by getting the 40 gig ps3...ppl will tell you otherwise becasue for some reason ppl aren't open minded and all they see is 80 gig as the good ps3
the 40 gig is cheaper but it's missing some feautures that really aren't all that important..you really don't need the extra usb ports or the card slots..unless you actually use them alot?
but pretty much you've got yourself a nice deal and you saved about 150$ (with tax..)

Actually, it plays ps1 games, just not ps2 games (im pretty sure).
The only advantage was the cheaper price point. The 80gb, obviously has more space and can play most ps2 games.
Both are great, the 40gb being for the more price conscience.

It's cheaper, that's about it.
The 40GB is the gimped version. It's got a smaller hard drive, it can't play PS2 or PS1 games, has only 2 USB ports instead of 4, and can't read Flash cards.
