EXCEL: How do I increase the number in a cell by 3% for 45 cells?

I'm doing this project where I have some hypothetical expenses like rent and food but the expences need to increase each year (each cell is a year) by 3%. So lets say I have $5000 a year for rent. Each column across the top of the screen is labeled with a year starting with 2008. So if I move over one column to the right that number needs to increase by 3% each time I move to the right.

Above instructions are correct. In Excel there are few ways to do this. So this is another easy way for you

Copy the values in the last column to the new column

It is exactly the same as previous column. But you need it in increased by 3%

So type some where in a cell " 1.03 "

    now copy it

Then select the last column (highlighting all data in that row)

Now go to Edit > Paste Special

Select the opration "multiply" and hit OK

Enter the first years rent into the first cell. (A1)

(I will assume that cell is A1 for this - change the entry in the following instructions to the correct starting cell if different.)

    Second cell enter this =A1*1.03

    Third cell enter this =A2*1.03

    Fourth cell enter this =A3*1.03

Now highlight the three cells, and right click - select copy from the menu.

Highlight the next rest of the row - put to the last year and right click and select paste.

Check that the sequence repeated properly. Each cell should point to the value from the prior year in the cell to the left.

    OR

say all your expenses is in column A starting cell A2, type =A2*1.03 to cell B2, copy it to the rest of the cells.

As you can see if you check all the formulas, the formulas will also move making expenses increase by 3% each year.

(p.s. sorry bfreebuzz, your expense will only show 3% of the expense, not increase by 3% or 103%)

Well, if you're working on B3, in B4, type

=B3*.03 , then hit enter. That should do it. Copy to the next cell. Don't worry, as you'll be copying the formula, NOT the number in the cell. Email me if you have more questions. Goodluck.
