I love Big Sur haven’t been there in a few years. It really is a beautiful place. We stayed at a place that was on a bluff overlooking the ocean. They had a trail that did go down to the beach. It was called the Kirk Creek Campground. It was a really nice place and they had everything you needed to make your camping great!
You might also want to try this website I used it to plan a few of our trips to Big Sur it has a lot of camping places listed and what their sites are like:

There are a few other great websites that list both public and private campground. I would take a look at them:

When my kids were young, our favorite vacation spots, within a few hours of San Jose, were: * Monterey/Carmel -- lots to do with kids -- the aquarium, horseback riding on the beach, kayaking, hiking. Some affordable motels in the Monterey area. * Gold Country -- pan for gold; visit caves; take a tour of the old West in Columbia State Park. Lots of affordable places for families. * Santa Cruz/Capitola -- the closest spot to San Jose. There's the Boardwalk, Roaring camp. The beach at Capitola is especially good for kids since there's very little surf.
