You can blame the closed-minded Christian conservatives that feared a Mormon in office.
In his home state that had him as governor, he struggled to make a 10% margin of victory.

The simple answer is that Romney was/is a flip flopper who was willing to say anything to get votes.
Unfortunately, very few people, me included, believed that he did not have positions. Therefore, it was easy to conclude that he was a man with a plan that he found necessary to hide.
Sound like anyone we know (George W. Bush)? Why would anyone vote for a person who could/would not disclose his real beliefs?
EDIT: We all get our information from some place - some comes from TV. The difference, in my case, is I believe none of what I hear and only half of what I see; in other words, view the world critically.
Romney said nothing that led me to believe he was anything other than a lockstep, right wing nut case. If you have sources to the contrary, I'd be happy to look at them.
No, the McCain we have today is not substantively better than Romney - both seem to me to be Bush neocon clones. That means renewing the borrow and spend tax giveaways of the Bush tax cut, continued reliance on war as a solution to problems that can only be solved at the negotiating table and a continued focus on rallying the extreme right to pass ineffective laws against social behavior. We don't need four more years of this nonsense. We needed a fiscally conservative, socially moderate leader. McCain could have been it; Romney was not it. Shame on the Republican Party, my Party, for pandering to nut cases. They had a chance to do better this year - they blew it.

How did we get McCain? He was preselected by the Democrats. Remember New Hampshire, illegal voting, etc.
