Is this typical of a mentally ill Virgo?

Spark of Gold, I always enjoy your questions. I think some others have already given you a best answer. I wanted to add my two cents that mental illness such as this can be found in all signs and it is not indicative of only Virgo in particular. As Left-T said, it will have to do with Mercury aspects and placements as well. There are other aspects which are probably pronounced too, such as Mars, Uranus and Neptune. In particular, I've seen this "Jekyll-Hyde aspect" with persons having Uranus conjunction the Sun or Mercury, but other astrologers attribute hard aspects of Saturn to Jupiter. Neptune opposition Mars often is detrimental with regards to psychopathic behavior. As Spica mentioned, she would love to see his chart. So would I.

I've been deeply into studying astrology for decades now, and I've got to say that mental illness is not something that can be categorized into what is typical for each sun sign. It's much more complex than that. I would say that what you are describing is more typical of malefic aspects that would be found in his chart.

You might be surprised in the study of criminology how many persons who were serial killers were often thought of as wonderful members of the community. John Wayne Gacy was a long time councilman, highly thought of church member and volunteer for the community. Dennis Rader was a well respected volunteer in his community and worked for the animal control. It is often found that mentally ill persons can put on a good front and get away with crimes, even murder.

The two serial killers that I mentioned above are both Pisces, and anyone into astrology will point out that this is not typical Pisces, mentally ill or not. It was other aspects in their charts. The Green River Killer followed a similar pattern and he is an Aquarius. Same with Sagittarius Ted Bundy, he could put on an act that fooled anyone, and that is how he got away with his crimes for so long.

In my opinion (and it is only my opinion) I do not think that mental illness can be categorized into what is typical for each sun sign. However, I do think that certain known and observed aspects can indicate a tendency of what type of mental illness could possibly develop.

I agree with the others about needing to see his chart. From what I've read in astrology books, plus my own personal studies, I agree about the harsh aspects of Uranus to Mars, Mercury, Sun or Moon. There's usually a great deal of emotional tension there, and inexplicable mood changes and hair-trigger temper. Harsh aspects to Neptune can tend toward acting in a deceptive manner. Definitely look at the entire chart to find clues to what is going on with your relative.

I knew a Virgo man (in my class) who was basically passive agressive and chipped away at someone they were angered with. It's really not even a downward spiral, but a downward slope.

I wonder what aspect conferred that charm and that craziness.

I agree with Ashley - everyone is a little different, no matter how well they correlate with their sign. Personally, I believe that people who are abusive suffer from some form of mental stress...

However, what you just described sounds more like the combinations of two signs: Leo and Virgo. Your grandfather might have had a bit of either sign - was he born near the cusp? (born around August 17-26?)

Here is why I say this: Leos tend to be very career-oriented. They take pride in excelling and achieving higher status, and they take pride in almost everything they do. Appearances and reputation drive their life sometimes.

However, some of the actions you described are a bit strange - Virgo tends to be docile and submissive, but from what you explained, your grandfather is a very domineering, if not confident. (please don't take offense in anything I say/ seem to be implying!!!)

I argue that your grandfather is a Leo - a fire sign - with tons of energy and ambition but no idea what to do with it.

As for your other question: "Do all signs act crazy the same or do they have different styles?", I think that yes, all signs act crazy and yes, everyone has a different way of showing that emotion. To answer your question in further detail, each sign has a different level of tolerance for emotion - some, such as Scorpio, thrive on raw emotion, turning it into energy and using it to fuel their desire for whatever it is that they want. Therefore, if Scorpio ever gets insanely jealous, then he/she might be prompted to...certain degrees of anger.

**Note: I have friends who are Scorpios and I have never seen them get THAT angry EVER! It's just an example!

Pisces, on the other hand, dwells in his/her own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. It's as if they live in an ocean of emotions, trying to sort their own from those around them. Thus, it is said that many Pisceans are prompted towards DRINKING - which, if done in excess, can lead to violent, abusive behavior.

Well, first of all. Everyone is different no matter what sign they are. It depends on their illness and how advanced it is.
