Alternative to a birthday Cake for a 5 year old?
My son is turning 5 next month, but he doesnt like cake, doesnt like cookies, doesnt like chocolate and doesnt like cream or ice cream. However, I dont think a birthday party is a birthday party without a cake of some description. We usually get him a cake every year anyway so he can blow out the candles but this year he has specifically requested that he doesnt want a cake because he doesnt like them. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do as an alternative? Hes crazy about Thomas the tank engine and I got him a model of Thomas with trucks saying happy birthday and wanted to use that in some way. Its small - about the size of a cake topper
He does like jellies (like cola bottles etc) and Jelly...
Any suggestions really appreciated!!
Does anyone know how to make a really funky looking Jelly cake?

You can make him jelly!
Example :

yeah... find a suitable mould for him, he'd love it! You can still stick candle holders for birthday candles.
My sister-in-law used to make this awesome Barbie doll jelly. I do not know where she got the mould from though... The skirt part of the gown is made of multi-colored layers of jelly and the top part she stuck the top torso of a Barbie doll. Gorgeous! (You might want to remove the top part away from the childrens' view though.)
All the best and good luck :)

Here are some Birthday Cake Alternatives : Ice Cream Cakes, Cup Cakes, Brownies, Rice Crispie Treats, Ho Ho's Miniature size Candies, snack sized Peperidge Farm Gold Fish Crackers Or Maybe an Ice Cream Sunday and put the candles right in the center once it is served to you son.

You could make him a cream cheese crumble with jello on the bottom, it's absolutely delicious.
Has he ever had an ice cream cake? I know you said he doesn't like cake or ice cream, but neither does my brother and he likes the ice cream cakes. Something about them together just makes the magic happen, i guess. :P
You could get a wide mouthed bowl and do a 5-scoop in a cup (5 different scoops either piled or arranged depending on the size of the cup or you could use a novelty type brandy snifter, that should have enough room for the topper)
if he doesn't like sweets you could make his favorite meal and decorate it (i.e. lasagna, casseroles, a burger or even a hot dog) just about anything besides soup will probably work...that and pudding.
I hope that helped, good luck and happy b-day to the birthday boy!
P.s.
worms in dirt!
gummy worms in crunched up oreos
or you could modify a streudel to his tastes
You could make a layer 'cake' using phyllo dough instead of actual cake and jelly in between kind of like a big turnover I'd imagine

That is interesting. I have a couple girlfriends who don't like certain desserts like chocolate but they have had time to develop that opinion.
He is only five so for him to be against certain foods so early is curious. It could be that he just hasn't had good cake or cookies according to his taste. As a baker, I have turned several people on to desserts that they swore they hated. I would suggest, if you haven't already, to make something from scratch. I don't mean from a box either like really from scratch. Pick something you know he likes and start there. For example if you know he likes bananas make a banana cream pie. It could be fun.
Another idea is to ask him what he would like instead of a cake. But he might not know. Sometimes when kids do not like a lot of desserts they get there sugar intake from fruits. If he likes fruit. You could do a cool fruit display. There is this company where I live in SoCal called edible creations that makes beautiful fruit boquets. They are very popular and are catered for different kinds of events like birthdays, anniversaries and so on. They are elaborate and fun.
Another thing that you could make are candy apples. They are suprisingly easy and only call for two other ingredients besides the apple. Marthastewart.com has video instructions on this. Of course, you could always dress your candy apple with a plethora of gummies and other fun candies.
Well, I hope this helps. Happy Birthday to your son ;)

My step-daughter doesn't like cake, so instead her boyfriend got donuts from Dunkin Donuts, all varieties, piled on a tray, with candles on top for her to blow out. You could put the Thomas trucks on top.
Good luck!!

Make him jelly in an angel food pan with fruit in it. Invert it onto a place and decorate with gummy worms and other candies. Just make sure he blows out those candles in record speed! lol

you should be able to buy a jelly mould from any good cook/bake ware shop there are loads of different shapes or maybe you could ask an older member of the family like a granny or great aunt they might have one of the old fashioned ones lying about somewhere you could use

http://www.your-vegetarian-kitchen.com/home has great recipes for pies and tarts. Or you could respect his wishes and not do dessert but bake him a fruit and noodle kugel instead.
