On Livejournal.com, what is a 'fake cut?'?

I know what an LJ-cut is, but what is a fake cut? I've heard the term several times since I started using my account, but I don't know what it is. Could someone explain?

A fake cut is a link to another journal entry which is made to look like an lj-cut (which is a link within a journal entry).

As you probably know, lj-cuts look like this:

    ( Link )

[Pretend that was all bolded and the work "link" underlined... I really wish Answers would allow html tags.]

People dress a link up to look like a regular lj-cut to fool others into believing they're clicking into the same entry when, in fact, they're being taken somewhere else. All you need to create one is to add the brackets and html tags to bold the text.

    Like this:

    <b>( <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/%22%3EThis is a fake cut</a> )</b>

[Also ignore the fact that Answers has decided to create a link out of part of my fake link... or maybe they haven't... umm. *shrug*]
