how far should a 2 yr old be able to count?

My 2 yr old can count to 30. I was just wondering if anyone knew on AVERAGE how high at this age they usually can count to? Also does anyone know when kids begin to know their colors?

My son turned 2 in February, and he can count to twenty, sometimes on his own, but usually with a little help once he gets past 13 (there are 13 steps on our staircase so we use it as a major counting tool).

He has known his colors for several months now. He knows red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, pink, and black, and sometimes he'll say brown. Black and brown both came in the last 2 months. He doesn't quite understand white yet.

He can also identify every letter of the alphabet (sometimes he calls 'U' a 'W', but that's still pretty darn close!), and can make about 6 or 7 letter sounds (like, A says 'Ahh', E says 'Eh'). He doesn't sing the alphabet like another post said their child was able to do, but he can sing '1, 2, Buckle my show' and the whole 'Miss Lucy Had a Baby' song, if anyone knows what that one is! His favorite part is 'Pizza! said the lady with the alligator purse'. lol

looks to me like a 2 year old can count to 30....as far as colors most of my 5 kids knew them by age two....dont let what the average is control what you are doing....I think that given the time most kids at 2 should be able to count to 30 we jusst dont give these kids enough credit for how smart the actually are

I'm not sure, my two year old can only count to 20 and recognizes her numbers and letters...she knows her colors and her abc's and can write a b and c... Then again, my neice who's three can only count to 10 and can't recognize the numbers or letters... but knows her colors. I think it has more to do with the parent, than the kid. Children are pretty quick to pick up things, just some parents don't have the time to spend teaching their kids stuff they'll learn in preschool, or kindergarten...

Sounds pretty smart. My son is 2.5 and still can't get the boy to count. But he's known all of his colors for a year now. So who knows. My son also recognizes the whole alphabet and some words but still can't say his abc's in order. LOL. I guess it just depends on what interests them more. Maybe your child will be a math wiz.

    Know colors and 2/3...

Counting at 2 is about 5-35.

I was horrible at counting... unless I had money. I've always been fascinated with coins.

You must be a first time mom. Children develop at different rates. Einstein didn't tie his own shoes or read until he was 9 yrs old. I don;'t think your child is behind. Trying to feed kids too much info actually sets them behind. They can only process so much.

Counting to 30 is ok, but does he know what it means?

I found the best way to start is by reading to them. They love it, and it makes learning easy and enjoyable, not a chore with great pressure. One of my kids had me thinking he was reading, but what he had done was memorize the page, by recognizing the picture.

Enjoy your child and satisfy his natural curiosity.

My daughter is also 2. I've heard her count to 16. She did sing the ABC song a couple of days ago. Colors are still iffy. She knows most of them.....most of the time. But tonight she confused orange & yellow. Green is iffy.
