Six outer triangles and six inner triangles (in the hexagon) symbolize the 12 Tribes of Israel and their founders the 12 Sons of Jacob/Israel
It was first the
Sheild of Solomon before it was the Sheild of David(Magen David)
The earliest use is in the Capernaum Synagogue (3rd cent AD)The New Jewish Encyclopedia, Berman House,NYC1962,Bridger, p300
The Star of David also symbolizes Zionism(19th cent AD) and is on the Israeli flag
The upper triangle points up and stands for God's transcendance( above all) and the down-pointing triangle stands for divine immanence(beneath all)
It seems to be medieval and not ancient as a jewish symbol
The Menorah(7 branched Candlestick of the Temple and Tent of Meeting) was an older symbol-7 for the days of creation and the divine number of fullness)
"It did not come into general use as a decoration [for] ..sacred objects until the 19th century" NJE p300

The Hebrew word for the star of David is מגן דויד (Magen David), which literally means the "shield of David". This is because, according to tradition, the Jewish star was a symbol painted on King David's shield. That said, it is unclear when, exactly, the Jewish star became associated with Jews, but it is believed to have come about much later in Europe during the Middle Ages. Before then, the מנורה (Menorah - Jewish candelabra) was the main symbol of the Jewish people and Judaism.

From Wiki:
The exact origins of the symbol's relation to Jewish identity are unknown. Several theories were put forward. According to one hypothesis, the Star of David comprises two of the three letters in the name David. In its Hebrew spelling (דוד), it contains only three characters, two of which are "D" (or "Dalet", in Hebrew). In the Paleo-Hebrew alphabet, the standard alphabet for writing Hebrew before the Babylonian captivity, this letter was written in a form much like a triangle, similar to the Greek letter Delta (Δ), with which it shares a sound and the same (4th) position in their respective alphabets, as it does with Latin. The symbol may have been a simple family crest formed by flipping and juxtaposing the two most prominent letters in the name.

There is no star of David is scripture.
It became an emblem of the jewish people in the 1800's.
Solomon was one of the greatest sorcerors the world had ever know.
He wore this emblem as a ring to control nature and the demonic realm.
One very good source is...THE JEWISH RELIGION:Its Influence Today.
