Christians: does your bible tell you to convert people to christianity?

I've just asked a question relating to converting people to christianity (http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ag... and was surprised by the number of christians who replied saying they didn't try to convert people.

I thought it was in the bible that all christians should try to convert non-christians, ie "spread the word of god". Is this not right?

If it is right, are christians who don't make an effort to convert non-believers really acting in accordance with their faith?

Only to those who want to accept Jesus as their savior and Lord.

Mat 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

We as Christians do not convert literally. We deliver the gospel and let the God do the converting. Many delivering the gospel today confuse this with convert and come off wrong to the person there talking to. One thing to remember when spreading the gospel with someone is that we do it with kindness and gentleness. Otherwise you'll do more damage than good. Just look at some of the posts of people who are crazed because of the "self-righteous" Christian who was forcing the gospel on them. They eventually do more harm than good.

I am reading Acts in the Bible. These people could not keep quiet, they had to speak what they had seen and heard, even if it meant going to prison. They were compelled to share the good news. I don't see that they were told to convert people. I think God does the "converting". Have you ever had a life changing experience (or even found a product that changed your life or improved your life) that you couldn't help but tell others that you care about? Maybe that will help you understand.

Christians are supposed to go out and preach the gospel. Whether the person actually takes it and converts is up to them and God. We're supposed to help them find that way, but the rest is between them. We can't exactly tie someone down until they agree to believe in God, though. The best you can do is just try and hope for the best.

    Yes!.

Matthew 28; 19 Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”

Those who do nothing are not obeying this scripture. Also the Bible does not limit the preaching to JUST religious leaders.

You are right. It is called obeying the Great Commission. Obviously alot of christians do not think enough of their families, other loved ones or just plain strangers that they keep the Gospel of Jesus Christ to themselves.

You people, unless of course you are christians in name only, get busy. The fields are ripe for harvest and the workers are few.

Seems like people just want something for nothing all the time.

    Yes.

Matthew 28:19 and 20 has already been commented on.

    Matthew 24:14

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness to all the nations; and then shall the end come. (Authorised version)

Did you know that even in "your bible" it says to just that?!

That is why Jehovah's Witnesses go door to door, because as you say, we are commissioned to preach to all the inhabited earth - not just a few! And it is clearly known that we do that because of how much we annoy the householder!!

It is by no means an easy task, but if we want to try and do God's Will (Jehovah), then we willing do the preaching because we know how much it pleases Our Creator.

Spreading the word is one thing, conversion is another. Conversion can only come through the person receiving the word, not the other way around. Christ made sure to word it in a way that would preserve people's choice of accepting or rejecting what they are told.

(Matthew 28:19-20) . . .Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”

This is a command from Jesus. If one does not obey Jesus that one is NOT a Christian.
