what is Adobe InDesign program used for?

Where in the heck are people getting the idea that InDesign replaces Photoshop and Illustrator? It is twice, this week that I have seen people claiming to be professional graphics people say this.

It is, most decidedly, NOT so!

InDesign is a page layout application in which graphics (created elsewhere) and text are combined to create layouts and prepare them for printing. Graphics can be created or manipulated in Photoshop, (particularly raster graphics) and created in Illustrator. (known to be the industry standard in vector graphics)

In InDesign, the graphics are placed and laid out in a form that REAL professional designers know works in an effective way to get a particular message across. It has very powerful text tools and style sheets to make a lot of typesetting operations a LOT easier. Multipage documents, such as books and magazines, as well as newspapers and catalogues can be quickly laid out, as this application was, specifically designed to do.

While InDesign can make a few, simple vector grapics, these functions are severely limited. And there is no way InDesign can make color corrections like Photoshop can do.

What these, so called, "professionals" probably mean is that the Adobe "Creative Suite" seems like an "all in one" software, because each of the associated Adobe products, "Photoshop CS," "Illustrator CS," and, "InDesign CS" work together seamlessly, and, in the proper, trained hands, work as if they are the same program.

But, you still have to have ALL of these separate applications, whether bought separately, or together in the suite.

I want to see if I can get some freelance work while going to school.

I'm pretty good with Photoshop, and Illustrator on the Mac and PC.

So what would InDesign really be good for? I wouldn't apply for a website job... just graphics or image editing. Would InDesign be a must?

InDesign has now pretty much replaced QuarkXpress as the industry standard for print layout. (Personally, I miss Xpress, but InDesign is more seamlessly interactive with Photoshop and Illustrator, so it's taken over.)

InDesign is extremely powerful and fairly elegant, but advanced effects, photo retouch and type manipulation are still better done in Photoshop and Illustrator. The image adjustment capabilities of InDesign are comparable to those of, for example, iPhoto.

If you want to work in graphic design you do have to be across InDesign.
