The costs of maintaining a dog properly are high. They need high quality food which isn't cheap, I spend close to 100/month on my two dogs in food alone. They need worming every 3 months, heartworm and flea treatments, vaccinations and annual boosters. Those are just the necessities then you have toys, treats and all the other fun stuff as well. Obedience training if you choose, and heaven forbid something goes wrong with the dog and you need to take it to the vet for that. I would say in vets, food, medication, toys etc I have spent close to $2000 on my dogs in the past 4 months.

Small dogs with short hair are low maintainance. They don't eat much and you don't have to spend more than a few min. every day brushing their hair. My dog is a toy poodle and he eats one can of mighty dog a day. His fur does'nt get matted and tangled like a shih tzu dog's does. The vet bills are what's expensive though. They have to have annual rabies shots and yearly vaccinations against viruses. My dog had to have blood work done also last visit. It cost me $216.00 total for the visit, vaccinations and blood work. Annual vaccinations are usually about $100.00. Flea and tick treatments are a must. I start them in April and go through November usually and it costs $50.00 for K-9 Advantix. They also have to have heartworm pills every year. They are usually about $20.00 for a 6 month supply of Heartguard but that's for a dog under 10 pounds too. The bigger the dog, the more the treatments and pills cost. Grooming for a small dog runs anywhere from $15.00 to $30.00 depending on where you go. They are worth it though. He's a great companion and my best buddy.

I varies depending on the breed/size, or the owners personal choice in how much you want to do.
We have a lab mix,
dog food $50.00 a month
no grooming cost, we bath her
vet yearly $250
leashes/collars $40.00 yearly
treats/cookies $15.00 month
toys/chewies $15.00 month
I think that's everything. Hope this helps you.

Actually it depends on us that how we will keep our dogs and make a habit .If we will give him simple food he doesnt have any problem . So, how we keep our dogs totally depends on us and the love towards dog doesnt matter that what will be the cost.
