How can you research a real estate agent?
I'd like to start looking at houses and someone referred an agent to me. I'd like to do a bit of research to find out the track record of this agent and heard there may be websites that I can go to (similar to the BBB but for agents) to see if there are any negative items against them. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can go on the state website for the real estate commission ( because realtors are all licensed by each state in which they sell) and see if the realtor is in good standing. Additionally, you can ask the realtor for references. You can also go on the broker website (all realtors work through a brokerage) and get some biographic information. You can ask the realtor directly how many real estate transactions per year he/she does, how many years in the business, average transaction size, etc.
Many realtors want you to sign an exclusive agreement with them. If you do that, you are stuck with them for awhile, and might owe a commission even if you don't purchase the house through him/her. So, it is better to sign an exclusive representation agreement that limits the agent to the houses he/she shows you and limits the time he/she is an exclusive agent ( you can make it just for the day) , or advise you do not care to sign an exclusive representation agreement.

Research is usually focused on solving a problem or addressing an issue or answering a question that can be done usually by performing following steps.
1) Select a specific topic in a research domain
2) Identify a problem/issue/question with the help of people who are related to your study and needs a solution.
3) Once you are clear about the problem/issue/question you have to search for what has already been done by reading latest research papers, listen to experts’ talks, and check for research group pages doing same study.
4) Now you are almost clear what you have to do so devise/adopt a method by carefully planning the time and cost to execute it.

Google "YourState Department Real Estate Licensing" and that should get you to the licensing department's website & most have a link that you can check on their license & any disciplinary action.
You could also try calling the Multiple Listing Service for your area & they may give you that info over the phone.
