Does Mars belong to humans?

With all the speculation and talk about Mars now, what do you feel is "our" right to explore Mars and possibly colonize it in the future? Generally people believe that the Earth belongs to humans - or at least, that we must take care of it - but Mars is an extra-terrestrial locale.

as with anything, It belongs who who ever can win a fight..whether it be war or a legal battle. Just like the united states, Did it belong to the indians? I guess one could say that it did, but in the end all that changed. Does the earth belong to us? It does till someone comes and kills us all, or enslaves us. Then we belong to them~ Ownership is based on the principle of power

Not only is it our right to colonize Mars, but mankind's destiny to expand beyond the confines of earth. There are too many uncertainties about the universe and is only a matter of time until we have another K-T event. (where an astroid killed off all the dinosaurs) Im sure crazy stuff like that happen regularly across the universe. For the preservation of our species humans need to colonize as many planets as possible!!!

The international space treaty states that the moon and all other celestial bodies can not be claimed by any one country or business, so nobody owns Mars if Russia went there and claimed Mars they would have a war on there hands, besides if life is found on Mars measures will be taken to preserve there natural habitat and that would mean limited colonization anyway.

In terms that we usually use to define property ownership on Earth, human beings don't own Mars. But in a broader sense, any planet that is uninhabited is fair game for colonization and exploitation. Since no one else is in a position to make a claim on Mars, I suppose you could say that it belongs to humanity.

Humanity has a history of invading other people's territory; from Alexander the great, Napoleon, Hitler to Bush in recent times. So, it doesn't matter what we think, if we, as in the big powers in NASA and the government, wants to take mars, they will find the perfect excuse for it.

Whoever gets there first, I presume. Unless there is actual life that we never found, in which case, Mars belongs to that life form.

The best way would be to coexist peacefully, if Mars were ever to be colonised.

It doesn't belong to anyone. It's just there. A human has never even been there.. only robots.

I'd be careful asking that question too loudly. Those guys are pretty sensitive about that issue.
