Law Enforcement-Why Not Just One?

I live in a small town now & I am curious as to why we have a sheriff's dept. & a police dept.Wouldn't it be less costly to combine the two? By the way,the deputies have a higher salary then the police yet both work just as hard.

It is mostly a matter of economics. Both agencies receive funding by the tax base of their jurisdiction. Taxes in a municipality are different than in a rural area.

There are some other issues too... for example, the police chief is appointed, and the sheriff if elected. The sheriff also has additional responsibilities, such as civil paper service and managing the county jail.

Because the Deputies patrol the entire county not just the in the city. On your theory we should only have Federal police. I only say that because the federal government goes from state to state to catch people. So why not just have a federal police force? Here is why, It is basically a check and balance system within the state. As well as there not one agency that is footing the bill to patrol and entire area of a state. We all help each other when needed.
