how do you deal with an emotionally unstable parent without being rude?

a parent that tries to put you down constantly, mainly so he/she can feel better about themselves (this is known because he/she always adds how good they are compared to you)....screams and yells a lot...tells you you're not up to his/her standard...

Are you over 18 and able to move away from that parent?

If not, you will have to find ways to ignore them. First, know that it is the parent and not you who is at fault.

If this is getting you down and making you feel bad about yourself, you will have to talk to someone about it.

If there is drinking involved, that is probably the reason for the emotional unstability. You can go to AlAnon and get some advice if the parent is a drinker.

Don't worry about being rude. Just tell the parent that you don't appreciate being put down constantly. Do it at a time when the parent is quiet.

    Good luck.

I have been in your shoes for 34 yrs. My mother is emotionally unstable & I just learned to deal with her. My dad passed in March, it's been a very hard few months with her. Pray to god you don't make the same mistakes with your children.

    Good Luck!
