I think in a way it does. Believe it or not, you burn more calories in class, or reading a book then you do watching television. I remember reading some where once, that when you watch television you tend to zone out, which lowers your body's metabolism more then being engaged in a book. However, it's not a miraculous jump (I believe you burn 1 extra calorie a minute) and nothing beats good old fashioned exercise. Sadly...:D

Well technically speaking yes, thought does require calories in order to fire individual neurons. But don't think that you can lose weight by just thinking, because thought does not burn a substantial amount.

Yes, you burn calories pretty much doing anything..even breathing believe it or not, even blinking! When you use your brain to think, your body is working which is burning calories.

not thinking in particular, but your body is always burning calories by being awake.
in fact, did you know that your body burns more calories sleeping than by watching tv!!
try developing a 'nervous thinking habit', like tapping your foot when you are working, you will burn more calories that way than by thinking and not tapping your foot!

Thinking increases the metabolic activity of the brain. It is an energy dependent process so it does burn calories.
Compared to the amount of energy consumed in muscle contractions the effect is minimal but nonetheless apparent.
