Will the Phoenix land safely?

The Phoenix Arrives

by Elaine P (5/24/08)

We are no longer alone on Mars,

the Phoenix arrives tomorrow

bringing Earth’s scientific probes

to the poets’ sorrow.

This bird has risen from the ashes

since I can’t remember when

sometimes I wish it would stay down

and never rise again.

Update:

The Phoenix is an actual spacecraft set to land on Mars today, May 26, 2008. It will join the Rovers and explore Mars to determine if there is or was any microscopic life on the planet.

Update 2:

Sorry, I meant to type May 25. Phoenix will land (or crash) on Mars about 7:30 this evening. The satellite will be in position to broadcast at 7:53. Good luck to the bird; I really don't want her to burn up!

I hope she arrives safely. Imagine her surprise when instead of microscopic life forms she finds tons of domes with poets inside them...what will the tabloids say then?

The site below has real time updates and the links on the left of that page might help with some of your questions. Happy landings Phoenix - good luck NASA! UPDATE: Successful landing and some great pictures coming down. However they are having some comms problems although these do not impact too seriously on the mission. They hope to start digging up soil specimens soon but this has been delayed by the comms problem.

My father was a pilot and then an air carrier operations specialist and accident investigator for the FAA. Prior to that, he bombed Berlin with a B-17. People can take bad and turn it to good.

That's really nice. Short and sweet. Great poem. 70 out of 100, if you don't agree with this score, that's fine, it's just an opinion.

And what be this phoenix bird?

    a metaphor for things uneeded,

    or troubled past calling again?

    Pray tell, do enlighten...

    if the Phoenix doesn't rise...

it can stay in it's ashes.

    ho what then? [3:5]

so will the bird eat from the hand?

will it sing our solemn song?

will she sit atop her stand?

with the KNOWLEDGE on a platter?

    ....
