eject the usb adaptor then plug it back in so windows find it again.
sometime the weather or pulling the adaptor out without ejecting properly will cause problems
good luck

I have heard of this failure before, on a Compaq laptop. Twice.
If the laptop is still under warranty, then that's the way to get it fixed.
If not, your most cost-effective move is to buy a wireless card (cards tend to have more power than the USB versions). Basically, what you've been doing, already.
You could always open up the laptop yourself, of course. I wouldn't recommend it. A tech saavy friend could look into Device Manager and see if the wireless device is still seen by the system. If not, the wireless device inside the laptop MAY be a small board that could be reseated or replaced. But it won't be cheap. Another possibility is that the switch itself is bad.
