What is a good area in Portland OR for a young married couple with no kids?

I have an education in graphic design and my husband works in the medical industry as a surgical technician... we are looking for a change and we both agree that Portland is a great city... what area would lend a good amount of culture and interest without breaking the bank... we are totally willing to sacrifice amenities and space for location... we would like to be downtown maybe… what is the area of downtown that would provide public transportation and maybe be close to a hospital?

thanks!

    As people have said, the Pearl District is great....unless you are on a budget. For some great culture at a reasonable price I would suggest looking at SE Portland. Hawthorne is great, as is Sellwood.

    Also NW 23rd is amazing for culture, and there are some decently prices rental units available within a 5 or 6 blocks (between 23rd and the Pearl).

    If you do want to be more in the downtown area there are some decent places in SW Portland, but rent (or prices in general if you are buying) is a bit higher.

    If you have a more specific idea of what type of unit or house you are looking for and if you want to buy or rent then I'm sure we could recommend some specific buildings.

    The Pearl District and Hawthorne and Belmont area are both great. Transport in all of Portland is amazing, you can get anywhere, without issue. Seriously look at places on Craigs list Portland. Before I moved there I used Cl to find Apt, job, furniture everything. The community there is amazing as well. I am from and now live on the East Coast again, but was so happy in Portland. The people are so friendly, and helpful. Enjoy your move.

    The Peral District BY FAR! It has gone up in the last 8 years and it is amazing. If you are buying a place look for the buildings; The Elizabeth, The Henry, The Gregory, The Wyatt, to name a few. I live in the Elizabeth and it is so amazing. There are streetcars that are not only free to ride but go right near the Elizabeth and all the way up to one of the hospitals in NW Portland. There is also OHSU (Oregon Health Science University) which is the biggest hospital and teaching facility in the state that I can see from my building. There are many art galleries nearby and people looking for web design constantly. There is always inspiration what with the festivals in the parks and the view from the condo windows.

    This is a site I love to see what's going on and what to do (but trust me there's more than this lists;

    I live in Spokane, WA, raised in Seattle, and have been down to Portland quite a bit, but mostly just drivin thru. Craigslist, like the gal above said is good for finding stuff, I'd have your hubby or you develop working networks there and plan a visit or two before you move to get a feel for each of the area's. Downtown might be a bit pricy, but the outerlying areas could be good. Public transp is all over the place there, and traffic is he!!. My advice would be to meet people in the same industry's as you and hubby, then visit and meet them to tour the areas. Good luck.

    Pearl District! My husband and I are moving there soon. It is such a cool area! But when you are ready to have children, definitely move! Beaverton is great to raise a family!
