I have a problem with unauthorized charges on my check card from a restaurant i ate at?
My family ate at a restaurant 1 1/2 hrs from home monday we were on a 3 day vacation. I happened to look online to see an extra $8 added to the bill for the total which i remembered clearly since we went that morning. I found the receipt which verified they added more $ on it. Now we're not cheap we left a cash tip so thats why Im so angry to see this too. The waitress wasnt even great she was slow getting to us and the hostess brought the drinks due 2 this. I called the place they keep running me around saying the mgrs not there call later. So now today someone says well we automatically charge an extra amount to guarantee a tip. What?! Nowhere did it say this they're obviously lying no store can do that once I sign my name for one price add $ to the total. Its not that i need $8 but its the principal if they did it to me I know they do it often b/c people rarely check. What can I do now?

I worked in various banks for years. The purchase from the restaurant is an 'authorization'. Most credit card machines at restaurants automatically add gratuity when the card is swiped, however when the charge clears you bank, it will debit the actual amount on your reciept. Trust me, in the next day or two you will see the amount that is on your reciept. If not, contact your bank so they can do research into the transaction.

I work in a restaurant, and I've never heard of "automatically charge for a tip". We have it where the customer can put a tip on, then add the total amount. And then they have to sign it.
We had a problem with one waitress adding a tip on, after the customer left. A lot of times people do not add a tip or total out the bill, so she would add an extra tip and total it.
Now we have to circle the amount that is being charged.
A lot of people do not pay attention. They just sign the bill. And that is STUPID. Obviously this is a common practice with some waitresses.
Make sure you talk to the manager, and get the $8 back. They can mail it to you. Like you said, it's not the point of $8, it's the fact that they tried getting more money out of you. In the future, CIRCLE the total amount.
If they won't give you the $8 back, then call your credit card company and explain it. They will help you.
Make sure you tell the restaurant that you will tell others what an unfair practice that they have. Restaurants do not want to hear that!!! Good luck and don't give up!!!

Report it to your credit card company. They will probably ask you for a copy of your copy of the receipt. Generally if there is a part of 6 - 8 or more there is automatically 15% gratuity added on. If you want to try to be real slick on them, contest the whole transaction saying you never went there. Seeing how they gave you the runaround, chances are their paperwork is bad too. If they cannot provide a signed receipt to the credit card company, you get your full money back (plus the free meal :)). The credit card company in this case is the good guy. If they find a receipt, show them your copy then (in a oops, o yeah we went there way). You should be given back the difference.
Restraunants leave transactions open to accept a tip and then are processed. Remember to always strike through the tip line if you aren't going to leave a tip, otherwise the waitress can fill it in herself. Always also remember to fill out your copy and write if you left the tip as cash or what not so you remember it too :)

well this happened to me too i was charged $23 extra i bought a bracelet for mothers day the lady told me it was for sale the original price was $103 she would leave it for 80 she was soooooo friendly and helpful that when it came time to sign the receipt i didnt check what i was signing i was too busy chatting with the lady so when i check my acct online she charged me the original price for the bracelet instead of $80. I didnt call my credit card or the jewerly store i took it as a lesson to be learned because once you sign it forget it.

Its standard practice to do that for a restaurant. They will tell you it will drop off your bill in a few days. However that is your money you don't have access to- We patrons need to revolt.

If you signed it, there is nothing you can do. If you didn't sign the recept then call your credit card company and dispute it.
