BYB questions ...?

This question has probably been asked by other regulars here, but ... how do you deal with all those queries like 'I'm thinking of breeding/studding out my *insert breed here*, 'My dog just had puppies, what do I do now?'. It depresses me. I've started adding a youtube link to a video about shelters and euthanasia with the hope that one of these potential BYB's will see it and think twice. It seriously made me cry. How do all of you who are devoted to animals and want only the very best for them respond when you have to give the same answer 50 times a day - 'please spay/neuter your dog'? Do you ever wonder if these people take your advice, or if they only hear what they want to hear?

Update:

Add: to brony1jane: this question was not directed only at you - by the end of yesterday, I counted that I had answered close to 10 questions about people wanting to BREED their dogs. I understand people can not put every detail of what they're doing into their question, but whenever they sound misinformed I try to tell them why I think they should't be breeding. That's why I post the video. There are too many homeless dogs in this country for people to ever think breeding is a good idea beyond improving their breed.

I give the best information that I can about breeding responsibly and move on.

There are times when I simply don't answer because I know I have used up my ability to be nice for the day.

I know there have been times people have taken my advice or have emailed me for more specifics... that's what makes it worth doing.

I don't like the questions at all really but I also don't like the way everyone who breeds is accused of being a BYB by some people. By that I mean people who tell everyone thier puppy was from a puppy mill or BYB.

I also hate to hear spay or neuter you dog all the time because I belive strongly in waiting until the dog is grown but I can also see the point most people are not responsible enough to do this.

We have a family behind us with two pits (adorable too) they are both female and young, the man complains because we take the puppy out to play in the fenced yard only with us out their yet he keeps the young dog chained he thinks ours has too much freedom worse yet he brings male pits to breed with his dogs that are probably not old enough for puppies especially the chained one. He thinks we are bad dog owners because we don't chain our puppy and make it sleep in a shed at night. Oh yes and we have laws that there should be no more than one pit in a home so I am not sure what to do. The dogs are nice at this point completly untrained don't even know how to sit and they think they are breeding quality.

It really is sad and I completly understand where people are coming from now that want all people to spay and nueter thier dogs, but I am still going to wait on my pup as I plan to do some sort of sport with her maybe agilty when she is old enough and she needs to grow properly. We have already discussed that she will not go out unleashed when she is in heat and we will have to take her to alternat (remote) places for exersize away from home. If I have any other questions asking here will only be in addition to a call to my trainer and vet.

No body likes to hear that they are wrong in doing what ever it is that they are doing. So we never know if our advice went anywhere.

I'm sure you have recieved a few nasty emails from some of the questions you have answered. I know I have.

All we can do is our best to explain where they are going wrong & what they can do to fix their blunderings. But, they do not want to hear that. They actually do think they are doing right. Or at least not doing something illegal. They just get pissed & do things the way they want to.

I do think that we in the whole are too harsh on some of the ignorance that pops up it's ugly head. We can't uninpregnant a dog, we can't hold their hands while taking them to the Vet., we can't take matters into our own hands & do for them. All we can do is show them or explain to them & they feel critized & judged. Since we are here to help, I think that we need to be gentle with them. I know......I know.......they are ignorant but we don't have to beat them up.

We need to show videos like this one more often to new comers. We can stock pile a few just for references.

Thanks for posting the video. If more people were aware of this perhaps they wouldn't breed.

It does get difficult at times but if one person decides not to breed, because of an answer I gave , it makes it worth it. I do not always answer the question, because it does get hard to do over and over again, and I know there are people on here who will give the same advice as me. I trust the people on my contacts list to give good advice for me, when I have just had to much for a day, and I think they feel the same. We know if we take a break there is others who are answering well. You just have to let it go, and trust others will be there with good information, when you reach that point.

Unfortunately most of these morons have made up their minds already. I think they post mostly because in the back of their mind they know its wrong and are looking to get support to ease their guilt. They wont find it with me. I try and explain to them why they should not do it. Generally I leave out the word moron, though it is tempting, and include more info than just spay or neuter and include reasons why. some people really are not all that informed and I cant fault them for that since they are clearly looking for information. I doubt if many of them listen though.

this question was posted after you called me a back yard breeder so im assuming it was sparked by me. My parents bread dogs since before i was born and i do know what i am doing, just because i didnt want papers does not mean i am a bad person, I can't get the dog im looking for here because of isolation and it is easy to get a DNA test to find out if its a pure breed (and dont say i cant because i did it with my male). If the female doesnt end up being pure i wouldnt breed her, my fiances mother wants a dog and she would take her if she wasnt going to be bread either that or i would keep her for a companion. please dont judge people if you dont know them or the situation.

EDIT FOR POSTER: I can understand that but in my case and more than likely a lot more, you are talking junk. I personally got my dog from a shelter and he was famished and in a lot of pain, my fiance and i are getting his mum a dog from a shelter because she has fallen so far in love with our puppy. I have looked at RSPCA but they desex all the dogs before release, my parents will be supervising the breeding because she has so much experience. please get all the facts before publicly humiliating unwarranted... that is called slander and its ILLEGAL.

The way I see it is, one way or another, they're going to breed their dogs because they don't care, so you might as well give them the correct information if it means less suffering for the animals in the end.
