Will trains make a big comeback for delivering goods now that gas is so high?

IDK, but our rail system is at capacity at the present time.

It was a crime to allow it to deteriorate as it did.

Trains can move 1 ton of goods, 400 miles, per 1 gallon of fuel. This was recently published.

You must consider the tonnage that can be carried on rails to understand the full impact of that

The average truck carries a load of about 90,000 lbs, up or down. 6-8 miles per gallon of fuel for 45 tons.

    400 miles @ 8 MPG uses 50 gal.

Based on 45 tons, a train burns 45 gal for 400 miles.

The comparison, I'm sure, is not accurate. A train carries much more than 45 tons and the 1 gal per ton per 400 miles is underestimated for multiple cars, so the weight factor is in error.

Consider that 1 railroad car can carry 45 tons, 90,000 lbs, or more than a truck.

Just thought this might be interesting.

Well what makes a train go? The answer to your question is no. I am old enough to remember when trains were used more than big trucks. What makes trains go diesel

Anything is possible... some things that are done in the old days were better and gave more productivity than some of the newer things..... ever heard of " some things are best left alone!"

In a word, yes. I wonder how much they're feeling the pressure now.
