Dreft Laundry detergent......?
I have been using DREFT detergent on my daughter's clothes since she was born because that is what her pediatrician reccommended. But he never did tell me how long I should continue using it, or when it is ok to switch to regular detergent. Can anyone help me out with this?

I only used dreft til the first box ran out, after that it was regular detergent with all of my kids. None of them broke out or had any rashes. If your child has sensitive skin you may want to continue to use it for a while. Just try regular detergent when you are ready and watch your childs skin for rashes. All makes a baby detergent as well and it is a little cheaper than dreft. Also any detergent that is allergen free (dye, and scent free) would be just as gentle on baby's skin.

Since you don't *need* to use Dreft, there's no absolute answer. We always use the dye and perfume free stuff in our household anyway, and if there's any possibility of allergies, I think it'd be reasonable to use any fragrance free brand (there are a lot of brands available) for a year. We also just used up the big bottle of Dreft we had and then switched to using our regular detergent.

Dreft is ok, but I like Tide fragrance free better, and I get more use out of it than Dreft. Uusually a child with "regular" skin can use fragranced detergent around 6 months. But I still use it even for my 2-year-old...

I never used Dreft or any other baby detergent I use the same detergent we use on all of our laundry and my son haas never had any problems with it. I use the free and clear kind for I have sensitive skin and my doctor told me that the kind I was using was just fine to be used on my childrens clothing also.
I would think it would be fine to switch right now and just watch for rashes or an allergic reaction and then you'll know what you can or cannot use.

You can stop using it at anytime. Try washing something of hers in your normal detergent and see if she gets a rash. The only reason they have you use dreft is to make sure the baby doesnt get an allergic reaction to anything in your soap. If she does have a reaction to the detergent you are using try somthing else, normally something without a scent will not cause them to break out. Save your money, don't buy anymore Dreft.

With my first born I used Dreft on his clothes for the first year. With this one, I'm going to use Tide dye free detergent. I can't believe how much a gallon of gas costs is effecting everything in my life. *sigh* Just can't win. Otherwise, I'd use Dreft for the 2nd baby's first yr of life too.

As long as your daughter's skin isn't overly sensitive I'd say to go on using it for 6 months to a year then start using regular detergent that has no dyes or fragrances in it. Still as far as spot cleaning I'd use the Dreft Laundry Stain remover because it's gentler than the other stain sticks/cleaners that are on the market (and gets formula out brilliantly)

My kids were all allergic to the perfume in Dreft, so I didn't use it. I used a "free and clear" non-allergenic detergent -- there are several different kinds. By the time they were 1 year or 18 months, I could use Arm & Hammer biodegradable, just enough to get the clothes clean (they tell you to use more than you actually need), and we have no problems,

I quit using it within a couple of months, and I never used it with my second child. As long as regular detergent does not bother their skin, there is no reason to pay that price!
If a regular detergent does bother their skin, it's usually because of the fragrance or coloring, so try one that does not dye the detergent or scent it...neither of those things make it clean clothing better.
Also, you can just set your washer to do a double rinse, so more of the detergent gets rinsed out.
I personally use All Free & Clear and use the double rinse option (especially when washing towels because they hold on to so much of the detergent).

I never used the special "baby detergents" I think it's just a marketing scam to get new parents to spend more money. I asked my daughter's pediatrician and he said to just use a free and clear detergent. We use All Free and Clear HE.
