Teenager: New cheap car, or used luxury car?
This will be my first car. I can't decide whether or not I want a new cheap car or a used luxury car. My budget is under $20,000.
I want a new car, but I'm not sure that I want to lose the features of a luxury car.
The features I'm looking for are high MPG, reasonable acceleration, and reliability.
The cheap car would be like a 2008/9 Toyota Camry/Corolla or a 2008/9 Honda Civic. Maybe a Mazda.
The luxury car would be like a used Acura or Infiniti. Nothing like a very-used Lexus/BMW/Mercedes.
And I want a car-car, not an SUV, Pickup Truck, Van, or Minivan. I could take a hand-me-down Lexus LX470, but it's so big and gets very few mpg.

if your a teenager, go with the new car. New cars are safer, more reliable, gets better MPG and overall just makes life easier.
Most used luxury cars don't come with warranties, and repair bills, which really adds up.
The Toyota Camry is a good car, but its a little grandma car ish in my mind for a teenager.
The corolla is a great car, but keep in mind that the drive is souless.
i think the honda civic is your best choice. It's a great car for a great price. Consumer reports ranks it amongst the best for first cars because of its great safety ratings, cool features and sporty ride.
Other good cars would be the VW Rabbit, VW Jetta and Mazda 3. They're economy cars, so they're pretty reasonably priced. They're built for teenagers so they're safe, and they're super fun to drive.
Good luck!

My ex has a Mazda3 and loves it. For under $20k, you could get it nearly fully loaded and still be able to add some sport tuning if you wanted. Mazda's warranty is great, the car is reliable and gets 24-30 MPG, depending on how light or heavy your foot is. I would shy away from paying that much for a used car when you won't get a warranty of any kind. Aside from that, if you try to get financing for a used car, your interest rate will usually be close to double what it would be for brand new.

you should take a look at the Mazda 3 with the 2.3L non turbo motor. you can get the Mazda 3 with many 'luxury' features like HID lights, navigation system, leather, heated seats and sunroof. It will be reliable, have solid mpg and reasonable acceleration.
You might be able to squeeze a brand new one under your budget if you negotiate hard, and you will almost certainly be able to purchase a very lightly used one for $20k

I would suggest a New cheaper car, my first car was a 2003 mazda 6. My mom bought it for me for $21,000. Honda Civics, and Toyota Corrollas are good choices for a nice first car. Another nice choice is a Chevy Colbalt.

you can always get the new cheap car and option the powertraine to your liking and then have the car sent out to get the luxary items that you want
like say you decide to go with a civic and choose the base engine for the mileage you might as well get the base car and send it out to have things like leather, audio system, airride and others that you want from a luxary car
of course thats just a opinion
goodluck

For your situation, I recommend staying away from a used luxury car. Even though the used luxury car seems affordable for you, you need to consider the maintenaince and repair costs. There is more to buying a vehicle than just paying for it. Luxury cars typically have higher maintenaince requirements and are more expensive to fix.
