Contrary to popular belief, Rose and "Sharon" are not dead. Rose and her husband can't see each other because they're still in Alessa's alternate dimension, while Chris is in the real world. Here's the deal...
There are three parts of Alessa:
- Alessa (the burned girl/woman in the oxygen tent)
- Sharon (Alessa's good side)
- Dark Alessa (Alessa's evil side)
Sharon and Dark Alessa are basically manifestations of the two sides of Alessa - the good side and the evil side. As for how Alessa created these manifestations and the alternate dimensions, it can only be assumed that she possessed some kind of supernatural power (as evidenced by the wilted flowers in her hospital room and her hurting the nurse). This, in addition to the fact that she had no father, would obviously lead everyone associated with the cult to call her a witch. That being the case, this is what happened:
1) Dark Alessa does not, in fact, take over or possess Sharon at the church near the end. Dark Alessa (the evil side) simply recombines with Sharon (the good side), creating a new and complete "reincarnation" of Alessa.
2) Alessa's "pact" with her evil counterpart that we saw in the flashback not only ensures that she will help her exact her revenge, but that Alessa, after making herself "whole" again, will also have a second chance at life with a new (and surely in her eyes, better) mother: Rose.
3) And as for the ending:
Alessa's plan works - she gets her much deserved revenge on the cultists, Dark Alessa and Sharon recombine and create a newly "reborn" Alessa, and she ends up with Rose (who either isn't aware or just doesn't care that this little girl isn't "her Sharon" anymore) as her new mother. Now with Sharon's memories of the outside world to work with after reuniting her two halves, Alessa can extend her alternate dimension and create a world just like the one Sharon and Rose lived in, where they can stay forever. In other words, Alessa doesn't want them to leave her alternate dimension and in her eyes, for good reason. The real world is where Alessa was hurt, abused and humiliated. In the real world, she felt unsafe, unloved and that the people are untrustworthy (especially men, considering that the absence of her father was the source of her torment, in addition to her horrific experience with the school janitor). Alessa wants to live out the rest of her new life with her new loving mommy in her alternate dimension, where she's in control and she feels safe. However, this is also how Dahlia's warning to Rose, "Be careful what you choose," comes to pass. Unfortunately for Rose, this end result means that she is essentially trapped in Alessa's alternate dimension indefinitely.
Hope this helps. :)

First time ive ever watched this film (bc when it first came out I was still a child lmao), so im a bit late.
I love the different theories for the ending and how they are still in the Silent Hill dimension!
This probably is not the real intentions of the film, but you could even suggest, from a non 'supernatural' perspective, that due to the trauma experienced in Silent Hill, they are in this fog like world, as to represent the trauma due to the suffering Rose and Sharon (and Alessa even) went through.
Returning back to a normal life after what they supposedly experienced and witnessed is obviously going to have a major shift in their perspective and reality. They both return home in this fog like 'dimension' and look and behave so different, they are not the same to how they used to be at the start of the film-so full of life and emotions. That's why Chris's world is normal and bright and colourful-to show a contrast- whereas they are still in the fog/misty, grey state because that's what Silent Hill looked like and now that is their new world in their minds-hence why Rose was behaving so 'out of it' and apathetic towards her surroundings (e.g the cop ladys bike) and Sharon just walked away from Rose at the end.
And to maybe to explain Chris, and why he didn't see them physically return (yet the door was open like they had), he cannot come to terms with what happened to his wife and child, to him that connection they had at the start of the film is no longer present as emotionally they never did return back from Silent Hill.

The reason Rose and Cybil are in an alternate dimension is that they went to Silent Hill during the night. Cybil even makes it a point of telling Rose that she (Rose) went to Silent Hill at night -- the director is telling the audience that this matters. When they attempt to leave the town they find that the road/mountain has collapsed in that alternate dimension -- they cannot leave; once you enter the alternate dimension that is where you remain. The ending of the movie shows that even though they apparently left Silent Hill the town, they never left Silent Hill the alternate dimension.
Note how different it was for Chris (Rose's husband). He tries to enter Silent Hill during the day, so when he does get there he arrives in Silent Hill's "normal" dimension. Hence, he never finds Rose/Sharon; in fact he never sees any evidence of them being there because he isn't in the same place that they are.

Ok, so all of these answers go back to saying she is in an alternate dimension. Here is my theory, Rose and Sharron died on the way to Silent Hill, so did the cop and everyone is in purgatory. Now if you look back and analyze it throughly you will realize that everyone else in that movie is dead, how would it be an alternative dimension if everyone is dead? Well if you understand what purgatory is in a bible point of view, it's where God sends people before they go to heaven or hell. Now everyone is in purgatory and when rose goes to see the "demon" she goes to see basically God to learn the truth. Then when she goes and visits evil Allysa she would basically see "satan" or "Lucifer" rose then learns the truth on both sides and chooses for herself on which path she will take. She releases those who were evil into hell and those who aren't ready to move on to thier proper endings stay in purgstory. That is my theory. The end

Unfortunately for Rose, this end result means that she is essentially trapped in Alessa's alternate dimension indefinitely. Also, what "dk s" is referring to is a quote by the movie's director, Christophe Gans, when he explains the "duality" of Alessa. Here's the quote from his director's blog: "We are forced to realize in Silent Hill that we can be our own devil, our own God. This very Asian perception is so completely different to the Anglo/Christian concept of God and the Devil as separate beings." Hope this helps. :)

Yes, no one died. Sharon is Alessa. That was explained in the movie. The woman was crying "SHE's MINE" to the photo because Sharon looks Exactly like Alessa. The woman is Alessa's mother. Sharon is Alessa but was taken to the new world because Alessa wanted at least one part of her to be free from pain.

actually you need to play the first game only. maybe Silent Hill: Origins, but you really only need to play the original Silent Hill. the only thing Silent Hill 2 has to do with the movie is a few monsters. other than that, Silent Hill 2 has NOTHING to do with the movie. I'll copy and paste the rest of my answer from other questions I've answered on this exact same question. call me lazy...
NO ONE DIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the only person out of Rose, Sharon and Cybil that died is Cybil when they burned her for helping Rose. when Alessa attacks at the end, all those people die. but initially NO ONE is dead.
play the games, you'll get it.
1. the reason Rose took Sharon to Silent Hill was explained in the movie. Sharon would sleepwalk and cry out the name Silent Hill, and Rose took her there to find out if there was anything about Sharon's past located there. Sharon was adopted from West Virginia and Silent Hill is in West Virginia. she wanted find out why she calls out for Silent Hill.
2. NO ONE DIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the only person out of Rose, Sharon and Cybil that died is Cybil when they burned her for helping Rose. when Alessa attacks at the end, all those people die. but initially NO ONE is dead.
3. her name is ALESSA and they were TRYING to burn her alive for supposedly being a witch. I guess being born out of wedlock makes a person a witch in their town. she's connected to Sharon by the fact that Sharon IS Alessa. and they did NOT kill Alessa. as you saw in the movie, she was rescued by the police officer and taken to the hospital where she did NOT die.
4. Alessa did NOT mother Sharon. she is the goodness that was left of Alessa. she is NOT Alessa's "child". she is a manifestation of Alessa's goodness in child form. this was also explained in the movie.
5. Silent Hill is on a different plane of existence. they crossed between the 2 worlds when they crashed. and for a third time, they did NOT die. they are still fully alive. everyone that goes to Silent Hill passes into Other World WITHOUT dying. play the games, this will be easier to understand. they didn't Mist World probably because that's where Alessa feels safe, she has power in this world. she has her new mother, that's all she needs. she has no knowledge of Sharon having a father, so she doesn't let Christopher in. she has a mother that will love her.
you really should play the games (Silent Hill: Origins, Silent Hill, and Silent Hill 3) in order to really understand the movie. the movie itself was based mainly on the original Silent Hill game for the PlayStation 1 with elements taken from the second game, Silent Hill 2 (armless Patient Demon, Pyramid Head) which has nothing to do with Origins, 1 or 3. theories surrounding the second movie installment speculate that it will be based on the 3rd game, showing a grown up "Sharon" (in the first game her name was Cheryl and changed to Heather in the third) finding out who she really is...Alessa Gillespie.
another note, in the original game, Dahlia wasn't Alessa's mother, she was her "creator". take a look at the links below find out all about the Silent Hill games that fit together to make up this story.
I know some of it got repeated, but I think it helps make that point clear.
Source(s): movie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill_(film) anyone who uses this link as a source and says that they died is INCORRECT. Wikipedia doesn't even say that they died. first game in the story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_hill_origins original game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill_%28video_... last game in the story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill_3 plus, I own all the games, all the guides, the movie, and I understood the movie no problem. playing the games really does make this easier to understand. - 7 years ago
Bad plot and horrible ending considering they didn't die. If Alessa wanted her new mom to be in another dimension, why not do that in the first place instead of going through all that jazz and suspense. It should of ended with them already dead makes more sense
