Does anyone know which actor in westerns John Wayne was paying tribute to in "The Searchers"?

I have read somewhere that the pose he made in the doorway in the final scene is an homage to a popular actor in western films. Does anyone know who this actor was?

Wayne was paying a quiet tribute to his long-time friend and occasional co-star of the '30s, Harry Carey. In his later years Carey had some pain and stiffness in one arm, and the pose Wayne takes, holding his arm with his other hand, was one that Carey's widow, and others who knew Carey (including director John Ford) recognized immediately.
