Why do we Atheist's have to prove there is no god, when, in fact, there is no evidence proving he exists?

Atheist are called upon to prove there isn't a god, we don't have to do that becuase there is no proof of god in the first place. I say let them prove it to us, we have all the evidence we need. So what do you say?

Update:

hey folks, I'm an Atheist by the way.

Bailey, too bad stop reading if you find duplicates.

Update 2:

To "gone is the night" Send me an e-mail. It's ******* like you that make us Atheists look bad. What the hell man. I don't have time to look up all these questions. How about not responding to them if they're duplicates? Or are you not smart enough to figure that out? geeze!

We atheists are under no obligation to prove God's nonexistence. The rules of logic dictate that those who take the affirmative position--in this case, the Theist argument that God exists--are obligated to prove their claims. We atheists may just sit back and watch the believers stumble all over their lack of proof.

I agree 100% and that's generally what I tell people who ask what proof I have. I don’t need to prove he exists. I don’t need to prove that fairies, elves, ogres, Leprechauns, Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny don’t exist either.

Since reading a quote from Stephen F. Roberts that reads, "I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."

I tend to just ask Christians (or other theists) if they believe in Zeus or believe in fairies? When they tell me no or that their god is the only true god, then I simply tell them that when they can explain why they can prove there is no Zeus or no fairies, then I'll prove there is no god.

On the other hand, if I am having an intellectual conversation with a theist and they ask how I came to the conclusion that god was a myth, I am only too happy to explain myself. How I am asked is just as important as what I am asked. Be nice, get a nice response. Be a jerk, and I will be a jerk right back. :-)

I think some Atheists are called to prove that God doesn't exist cause they want Christians to prove that God exists.

Hmmm, at one point a while back I asked this kind of question but only to see what the responses would be.

Honestly, I won't ask you to try and prove to me there is no God; I don't want you to anyway. I believe what I believe and no human being is going to change that or convince me differently regarding my personal life experiences.

I respect your beliefs, agree to disagree, and that's that.

Hopefully you will extend the same courtesy to me; I don't have to prove anything to anyone.

    Peace. :)

We don't. "Well you can't prove that he doesn't exist" is the child-like and irrational last resort of a believer who has no facts to back up his position. It always reminds me of a 6-year-old responding to an insult with "I know you are but what am I?"

The burden of proof always lies with the party making the claim. Simple, basic logic. Otherwise, I could claim that there are tiny invisible goblins living on the moon and unless you can disprove it, you have to accept that it's true.

Like Rev.Kip said there is no proof either way in the eyes of the Atheist.

However when one looks at the mentality of the Atheist verses the Theist its not hard to pick a side. The Atheist relies on theories and childish statements about religion. The Atheist either insults the theist or shows a total lack of understanding of the different religions.

yes, the burden of proof would rest on who makes the claim, this is simply the way things go, and disproving the existence of anything, be it an invisible pink unicorn, or a flying spaghetti monster is impossible.

    Same question for Christan's.

If you do in fact have all the evidence necessary to prove there is a god. Then, why does it bother you that people have other beliefs?

  • 1 decade ago

I don't see why we HAVE to prove anything to anyone. Its a lack of belief, anything else is just a justification for this lack of belief. I don't know why I or anyone else should NEED to justify ourselves.

Wanting to defend your position is fine though, and many of us choose to do so. However it should not be a requirement.
